If you knew anything about the Ngata story you would not have posted this. First of all, yes BYU recruited Haloti very hard, however they did not get him in touch with President Monson to try and sway him, you are an idiot for saying that.

The Ngata family had connections to President Monson through other means. Haloti felt strongly that he needed to go to Oregon, he wanted to play at BYU but he felt he needed to go to Oregon, and now we know why.

His freshman year at Oregon (when he would have been on a mission if he attended BYU) his father passed away in a car accident. Haloti was there for his family during this tough time (he is the oldest son). Then shortly after his junior year his mother died of a heart attack, now he has to take care of all of his younger siblings, so he decides to go pro. He gets drafted 12th overall and can now support his family who does not have parents.

I dont think Olga knew at the time why she felt the need for him to attend Oregon but she does now. If he was at BYU his mom would have passed away right after he came home from his mission, he would have to withdraw from school to take care of his family and they would still be struggling.

I coached against Haloti when he was at Highland High, and he struck me as a very nice kid. This article - more than anything else to me - points out the hysteria that sets on these youngsters from the days of tender youth. I used to work with Ngata's uncle for whom he was named (and former U of U SB Pres.), and he told me about how hard the various schools were pushing this kid. All he wanted to do is make his family proud. I'd dare say he's done that and then some.

There's plenty of stuff out there for us to rip on the BYU. I don't think a seven-year-old non-story about a good kid who had to make a tough decision is one of them.
