Good grief, I can just imagine the gauntlet Manti is being put through now, replete with a first presidency grilling and a blessing by Thomas S. Monson! So this is what schools compete against recruiting Utah hot shots.

Here's my favorite part:

I bet that's not what was intended! LOL. Give mom credit for finally letting her eighteen year old boy go to the school he wanted to attend all along!!! Mormons are so weird.

I picked this up on CB. It's a sign of the lack of introspection over there that the commentary is all about what did Oregon do to buy the kid off, nothing about BYU and its owner's conduct. This should put to rest any idea that BYU is not just a department of the LDS church.

Honestly, involving the LDS First Presidency in recruiting for BYU seems so undignified. You wouldn't see Pope Ratzinger condescend to that, I guarantee. I need a barf bag.

Interestingly enough, it was Jay Drew that bucked the local BYU insiders and said he was going to Oregon. Drew is pretty good on the recruiting beat.

Drew was getting his info from Uncle Haloti while the rest of the world, me included, got their info from Olga and Haloti himself. I knew Uncle Haloti was involved and pushing Oregon, but it was hard to believe he knew the situation better than the player and mom. Drew has good high school recruiting connections. He got lucky on that one though.

His freshman year at Oregon (when he would have been on a mission if he attended BYU) his father passed away in a car accident. Haloti was there for his family during this tough time (he is the oldest son). Then shortly after his junior year his mother died of a heart attack, now he has to take care of all of his younger siblings, so he decides to go pro. He gets drafted 12th overall and can now support his family who does not have parents.

I remember it being suggested on CB at the time that this was somehow poetic justice.
