However by sitting Masoli the entire season, it is hard to argue that Chip is trying to brush it under the rug. That is a big-time suspension.

1 game for LMJ is weak, though. Chip will likely catch some fire for that.

I think the big takeaway in light of all this offseason activity is that Oregon doesn't have a clear internal discipline policy in place. They seem to make up punishments as they go. From what I gather, Bellotti is working on establishing some clear written policies, which I think is a good thing.
I think part of what made Masoli's so long was that he denied to the coaching staff that he was involved. From the get go he was saying it wasn't him. Chip has said multiple times that he needs you to tell the truth.

I am also not sure what to make of the LMJ situation. I am not going to try and minimize domestic violence at all, and I feel any argument put forth about the lack of severity of LMJ's crime would be doing that. So I will say that I trust Chip Kelly, I think he has shown to punish hard. Blount and Masoli show this, there are plenty of schools in the country or even P10 that wouldn't have handed out as harsh of punishments.

yeah, no Im not slagging on Chip.

Benching your star QB is a too legit to quit move. Like I said, can anyone claim that he refuses to discipline after he has basically scorched earth 4 or 5 team members in the past month?

In Masoli, we are talking about a possible P10 player of the year and in the Heisman discussion depending on how well the Ducks do this season.

If he has proven to be a liar to his coach, then the coach has to cut his losses. Chip makes himself out to look like a fool if he is going to bat for Masoli under false pretenses.

Now I will say this, though.....IF they let Masoli come back mid-season this year, that will be a crock of BS. They have played these cards so they should now stick to them.

One bit of good news for Oregon fans....at least this crap is over. Now they can focus on spring ball and possibly learning a new offensive system.

The Masoli punishment seems harsh, but is it? He's essentially just being redshirted for a season, and therefore not missing out on a single snap. When he comes back he's likely to be even better than had he not been redshirted, increasing his odds of NCAA and NFL success in the long run.

I feel bad for his backup, who gets to take over for one season only to be benched again in 2011.

The backup however is a 4 star kid, who drew comparisons in HS to Vince Young, and was offered by Florida, LSU etc. My thinking is that Masoli will transfer.

100% agree with this. Blount was a little different in my opinion, but they can't renegotiate this penalty mid-year.

Yeah I wasn't aware of how good the backup might be. Sounds like a transfer might be the best thing to do. He could go anywhere his coach would let him, too. I'm sure there are some good programs outside the Pac10 that could use a really good, if slightly dunderheaded, QB.

He would have to go somewhere that runs a spread. I don't know what the QB situation at LSU is, but I imagine that Miles and Crowton would love to have him for 1 year. Plus two arrests in the SEC makes him a model citizen.

ha. i was going to say....Urban needs someone that can run the spread.

What a contrast that would be....the gators go from Jesus to Barabbas and not miss a beat.

Michigan would probably be a great fit for him too. They've got 3 or 4 lightning quick, highly-touted QBs that are all too young to figure out how to do anything and could benefit from sitting behind somebody like Masoli for a year.

Tyler Shreve will get the same punishment. He will redshirt next year. See, at Utah we don't take beating up coaches lightly.

Mike Bellotti says enough of this garbage, I'm off to Bristol.

wow, that is pretty big news for Oregon.

My guess: Bellotti will start pushing for an NFL gig in the next few seasons. He can't stay in the discussion as an AD, but he can remain relevant as a commentator.

I also guess that they send him to help cover the Ducks/Vols game.

I think he will be at ESPN a year, maybe two, then push to get back into coaching. If that is NFL or college I am not sure.

How is this being received amongst the fans? I gotta be honest, when I saw this news my immediate thought was that he was an absolute coward...pulling a Newheisal, Calapari, etc...

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I haven't seen any of that reaction. Most are saying that they should rename the field at Autzen from Rich Brooks Field to Bellotti or Brooks and Bellotti field.
