Ute fans need to get past the thinking that he is a lifer. He's not

I think BYU is fortunate in that they do have a draw, the LDS connection, that will keep coaches there in spite of bigger, higher profile offers. I do think Bronco is a lifer.

I think the only schools that have "lifers" at H.C. are ND, SC, Texas, Florida, OU. Who else? Maybe Ohio State and Michigan? And BYU. In that regard, BYU is in a very select group.
Were you born yesterday? Of course this is just a job to him. Where does this "loyalty" crap come from? How much loyalty can he expect from fans the ilk of Portland Ute?

I think Andersen would be back at Utah in a heartbeat. Then again, maybe he'd rather become a hero at USU than be the goat at the U. if things don't maintain... If he turns USU around, he'll have a shot at a bigger gig than Utah, IMO.
Gary Anderson is an incredible coach and recruiter. I have a ton of respect for Coach A and know he would be a great fit for the Utes. I don't think Chris Hill would need to call anyone else. Gary would pick up right where Whit left off and do great.

Well, you know what I mean. BYU hasn't beaten Utah more than two times in a row since the Detmer era. Also, every win after 1992, except for 1996, has been a nailbiter.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Well, given the subject matter of this thread and recent events on the East Coast, I would say that neither SC nor Florida have lifer coaches.

All of these guys are going to listen to offers and do what is best for them. You don't get to be a D1 coach without an established history of ladder climbing, moving from spot to spot, and doing what it takes to advance.

People confuse taking a new job with a lack of loyalty. Even SC greats like McKay and Robinson left for the NFL...and John McKay is a god at SC. Moving on to new things doesn't always mean a lack of loyalty (although it definitely can). In Pete's case, how can you fault the guy? He fulfilled his end of the bargain while at SC. He brought back the dynasty and took the team to unprecedented heights and glory. He enjoyed A-list status and mingled with the Hollywood elite. What more can people ask of the guy? He was here for almost a decade.

I don't think there are ever lifers in college anymore. Joe Pa, Bobby Bowden and Lavel Edwards are no more. I agree DDD. When all is said and done, coaches want to be successful on the highest level. As much as I love college football, the NFL is king and will be able to take the best college coaches at will from there respective programs if they want to. Coaches have some of the biggest egos out there and it is an ego thing. They want to prove they can be successful on the biggest stage and that is the NFL.

I guess I mean "lifer" as in not going to another college program. The risk of losing a coach from Florida, SC, etc. is much lower. You don't have to worry about them going to another college gig. It's really only the NFL and those opportunities aren't as plentiful as the opportunities for a jump that are laid out for a coach like KW or Peterson or Patterson.

                  Douche, please!

I'll keep KW for as long as he'll stay.

I'm specifically addressing the Ute fans on Utezone and elsewhere that don't think KW is ever going to leave Utah because he loves the state and wants to stay close to family. It's bunk. He'll be on the first money train out of town which he feels comfortable boarding.

I agree here. Loyalty is a feeling that fans invoke. Fans are (mostly) loyal and expect that everyone one else associated with our team will be loyal as well. It is a polyyanna emotion that fans impose on everyone else.

Good luck Pete with my Seahawks. I hope you can fix the trainwreck that is the silver and blue (and green).

Bronco is a lifer at BYU. He will not coach any other college football team as a HC. I testify to this. I know it to be true beyond a shadow of a doubt and with every fiber of my being.

                          Yes, exactly.

Fight On Pete and maybe someday his path will cross with SC again.

Now it is time for SC to usher in a new coach and whomever it is....Leach or Whit or Gruden or Sark, etc....Fight On, New Coach!

A friend, and obnoxious Southern Cal fan (yes I know it's redundant), is convinced that USC will bring in a former/current NFL coach. He thinks the biggest draw of athletes to USC is the success they've had getting players to the NFL and that it is a must for USC to model itself as an NFL-lite team. (This hurts candidates like Kyle and Gary, in his opinion.)

He thinks Del Rio gets the job but Jeff Fisher is his dream pick.

To tell you the truth, I've got mixed feelings about PC leaving. It was always inevitable, but the timing and the circumstances do make you wonder. My family has had a love/hate relationship with he & some of his staff over the years (I'll post some PC stories later), but that doesn't take away from the the great times I've been able to experience. It was a great run, but they're no longer part of the Trojan Family and it's time to move on.

What does SC do now? Garrett can't sit on his butt and take his time; signing day is in three weeks. I don't however want him to run out and make a panic hire (Herm Edwards). I thought Riley would have been a great fit; he's considered part of the Trojan Family and is quite popular at Heritage Hall. I can't blame him for not wanting to follow PC as DDD implied, you never want to be the guy that follows the legend.

I don't know who they bring in, I was hoping that Jeff Fisher would come back home, but that doesn't seem like it will happen. Whitt is an interesting candidate; I think he would work, but I don't think the rest of the alums would have the same opinion.

I know for a FACT that Chow wants to be back in Cardinal & Gold. I hope whomever is hired makes this his first phone call. That would be great, Chow back at Heritage Hall and FUCLA with out their OC. The wheels fell off when he, Tim Davis, Ed Ogeron & Kennedy Pola left the program.

I've got to head out, but will post more later.

                              Fight On!
