Sammy Baugh? The guy played almost 100 years ago. O'Brien was pre WWii, no? That's sort of like saying Utah State as a rich tradition because Merlin Olsen played for them and a kid named Kevin plays WR in the NFL.

I grew up in Dallas. TCU was the laughingstock...when they were sanctioned in the 1980s, everyone wondered whether TCU should be allowed to pay players since they sucked so much. I remember when they went to a bowl game in the late 1980s (i think) and that, too, was a joke. I think it had been 20 years since they had gone to a bowl and I don't think they made it back to one for some time after (8 years or so?)...so 2 bowls in almost 30 years. Hmmm

Two players does not a tradition make.

To take TCU to the BCS is a far greater accomplishment than meyer taking Utah and later Whit taking Meyer's recruits.
That's not correct. He replaced Dennis Franchione, who was successful enough to be hired away from TCU by Alabama. Moreover, if you go back in time, TCU has a much richer football history than Utah. TCU is also located in Texas. I don't know what Franchione left behind, but Whit had to rebuild. I doubt Patterson finishes ranked no. 2 this year. Maybe, but I doubt it. He also hasn't beaten as many good teams as Utah did last year, and won't have after the Fiesta Bowl come what may. This team hasn't come as far as Utah did in 2008. Their winning percentages are identical. 73+%

I just about fell out of my seat. Also, doesn't TCU have a NC or two in it's trophy display?

Katy said that you need some savoir-faire to coach at a place like Florida. I agree. Why do you think Majerus was never offered by a true top tier school? Mentioning Patterson's obesity was fair game.

I've never claimed Utah has a long football tradition. On the contrary. On the other hand, BYU's is pretty much ancient history.

All you have to do is look at the recruiting lists to see if Whit inherited a pile of talent from Meyer (they're on the Internet). He didn't. He's recruiting a lot better now than Meyer ever did, per the lists. Moreover, 2008 was mostly two-star players, including Johnson. You're making this up as you go, aren't you.

EDIT: Anyone could recruit well at Florida.

North Texas State is located 40 minutes from the DFW metroplex and I think I could suit up for them and start at the tender age of 36 coming in at 5'11" and 175 lbs. Seriously, the TCU tradition is similar to the Baylor tradition: armpit of Texas (and I guess, stronger than Utah tradition).

You're right. On the one hand, you have a team who had little to no success before hiring a flash in the pan coach who led their team to two great seasons, thanks to the first overall pick of the next year's draft, and who then ditched that team for the SEC.

What made you think Utah had such a respectable tradition? It didn't win the WAC title outright in 40 years. It hardly played in a bowl before Ron McBride, and we all know he was a flawed coach who did not win an outright conference title and wound up fired (but 2004 was accomplished with his recruits, NOT Urban Meyer's). Before 1994 its claim to fame was the "big" Liberty Bowl win behind Lee Grosscup.

Kyle Whittingham built a national program in Utah, starting with a team that was pretty wiped out.
