    Great opening presser

Kelly said he was ready to get to work restoring Notre Dame's traditions.

"Those aren't 8-4 years. Those are national championship years," he said. "So any time you're talking about restoring a program and the challenges, it's not about winning the conference championship, it's about winning championships and being in the BCS and being nationally prominent. That's a challenge. We've got to get to work on that."
He already has the job. If I were him, I would have set realistic goals that could be accomplished as soon as next season.

He has a fast plan to restore ND to the NC level....yet he only has 1 QB under scholarship right now...and that QB is injured with a torn ACL.

This guy is toast. He didn't learn from Weis's intro press conference.....when Kelly is fired in 5 years, the blurbs will all include his quote today about getting back to winning National Championships.

The Irish, like any other company looking to rebuild, should be focused on more realistic goals......return to having a winning season, figure out how to compete for a BCS bowl. National titles will come after that. Maybe. If you are really lucky.
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Except that ND didn't hire him to win 9 games next year, or 10 next year. They hired him to win a National Championship. If he stands up and says he's going to compete next year and maybe even reach 9 wins, well, there's no way he would ever say that, given the expectations of the university. Of course the university could change its expectations, as you already alluded to.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Like I said, he already has the job. In the interview, promise them the sun and the moon.

In your intro press conference, underpromise, over-deliver. Or get fired after 5 years. This is much like talking to shareholders after a really bad year. You don't promise to quadruple stock value in the next couple of years.

Notre Dame won't fire you if you are regularly going to BCS bowls and having 10 win seasons.

Right, you have to tell the people what they want to hear, but there's a better way to say it. The smart coach - the coach that really goes on to effect change - alludes to the grandiose expectations without explicitly promising anything tangible.

"Notre Dame is not an average program with an average history. It is simply the most successful, the most storied, the most envied program in all of college football. We simply do not and will not accept mediocrity.

I expect to see immediate change and immediate improvement; and we're going to win one game at a time until we return this program to its rightful national prominence."

Perhaps Brian K. is hoping to parlay the Irish gig into the Raiders HC job. Al Davis probably fell in love with him today.

Notre Dame can't compete for an NC because it thinks it's Ivy League. Response: There's no reason USC can compete for an NC and Notre Dame can't. USC is a comparable school academically, and has standards too. I haven't checked but I bet USC's and ND's recruiting hauls have been comparable the past five years. I remember Clausen was the top rated quarterback in the country. I bet even now ND's class is respectable, despite the controversy. Recruiting is one thing that is not a challenge at Notre Dame.

Willingham and Weis failed because it's impossible to win at ND and the ND alumni are totally unreasonable. Response: How can anyone doubt that Willingham is a TERRIBLE coach, and got exactly what he deserved from ND and Washington; no, actually he got way more than he deserved from Washington. From all I've read and heard from people who actually know Weis, he's not only an overrated, blow hard coach, he's a bad person. Why did anyone ever think that being Bill Belichick's bag carrier qualified Weis to be a good coach? ND has struggled for the same reasons that Texas struggled before Brown, Alabama struggled before Saban, Oklahoma struggled in the late '80's and the '90's, and USC struggled before Carroll--bad coaching. It can happen even to the top five football traditions. Notre Dame has made at least two terrible coaching hires in a row.

Kelly was disloyal to Cincinnati and his players. Response: Grow up Cincinnati! Coach Kelly aint your mama. Fans can call for a coach's head at the first tribulation or disappointment, the overgrown babies who entertain us on the gridiron can go pro anytime (and it's ignoble for a coach to try to stop them), but a coach can't take a better job to advance his career and for his family. I don't think so. It's been long established that loyalty is not a paramount concern on anyone's part in big time sports--not for fans, not for anlumni, not for franchises or institutions, not for owners, not for players, and of course not for coaches either.

Kelly can't recruit because he's never had a better than no. 60 ranked class. Response: No. 60 ranked class isn't bad at Cincinnati, but he'll be able to be top 10 at ND without trying. Someone could have questioned Urban's recruiting ability before he was at Florida a couple of years.

What's this crap about Kelly not being allowed to coach in THE SUG? Has Cincinnati ever been in this position before? Does it expect to be back in this position anytime soon? I've always respected Chris Hill for going against fans' moronic knee-jerk reaction and realizing that maximizing the odds of beating Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl was a lot more important than being proud and nasty to Urban Meyer. It's called not cutting off your nose to spite your face. If Cincy loses, as it likely will, the loss would also not get the new coach off to a good start. In restrospect, I think Kyle would have won that game on his own, in his first head coached game, and without a staff. But we didn't know that then. Three years from now it won't matter whether Kelly coached THE SUG. If Cincinnati beats Florida people will never forget the game.

All this just confirms what we've known. Cincinnati is not the kind of program or institution--it doesn't have the character--to walk into THE SUG and crush a traditional SEC power and top 4-5 school right in the SEC's sanctum sanctorum.

That's my point. If it spoke for itself, you wouldn't always have to speak for it. What I'm asking for is a little humility. I couldn't imagine Joseph Smith SWISHING all over the place for predicting the Civil War and White Horse Prophesy.

No. He just put on a general's uniform, rode a white steed and flashed a saber about, and ran for president.

How is it that Notre Dame was so bad for so long and OU doesn't sign them until this year?
