  • This is what ESPN said earlier today:
UPDATE: The latest from GatorCountry.com late Saturday morning is that Bob Stoops is finalizing a contract to become Florida's next coach. GC's Buddy Martin and Raymond Hines have confirmed with multiple different sources that Stoops is negotiating with the Gators, with former QB Kerwin Bell possibly coming in as his offensive coordinator.

However, Hines cautions that the deal could still break down, and that Kyle Whittingham and Will Muschamp have been added to Jeremy Foley's B list as backups. (Although with Chris Petersen also on Foley's A list, it'd be a shame if Foley had to go lower.)

Good news Coug fans, you'll get to play Texas coming off their worst season in 12 years with two new coordinators.
I think that is just a touch of reach to me. I know he was the CIW at Texas but I don't think FL landed who they were looking for. How many times were they turned down, I wonder?

Tim Tebow just tweeted that it's Muschamp.

edit: Ooh late on that one. Seems like a decent hire.

          Florida could have done better.

That is what I am saying. This could be a setback hire if Miami makes a splash.

You are Florida. You have a ton of money, a great recruiting base, and a huge alumni network. You start at the top with proven head coaches and work your way down from there. You don't hire a first time head coach. This seems a lot more like the Ron Zook hire than the Urban Meyer hire.

I agree this is a setback.

Agreed. So much for coach in waiting. That's such a stupid thing to do.

Assuming the reports we've heard the last few days are correct, Mullen, Stoops, and Petersen were the top 3 candidates; Strong, Whittingham, and (perhaps) Petrino were the next tier with possibly Muschamp. So at least 3.

I would take Muschamp over the names being thrown around for the Miami job in the last few days (Al Golden, Randy Edsall, Marc Trestman).

I wouldn't take him over Edsall. Edsall would be a good hire by Miami IMO. He's been successful without a lot of talent. Plus he's already familiar with the Big East. I think he could step in immediately and take over the Big East.

Take all my caveats away. I think this is a bad hire and bites them in the ass. Florida shouldn't hire coordinators with no HC experience.

Miami went back to the Big East?

This. Well said Funkster. When you're the one of the kings you don't settle for a first time HC.
