    • From ESPN.com's CFB rumors section today:

      Donation earmarked for Hoke
      San Diego State Aztecs

UPDATE: Jim Sterk revealed on Tuesday that an unidentified donor has already pledged $5 million to the San Diego State athletic department, and that Sterk will use that money to offer Brady Hoke and his staff significant raises and to upgrade some of the school's facilities. If the Aztecs really want Hoke, it's not inconceivable that they could double the $700,000 he's scheduled to make in 2011. But with Hoke's continued refusal to declare himself out of the running for the Minnesota job, and with interest from Indiana likely (though, he says, no contact has yet been made), it's going to be a tall order to keep him from fleeing back to the Midwest.
      Is Bienemy now top candidate?
      Colorado Buffaloes

So much for hiring someone with previous head-coaching experience. John Henderson of the Denver Post reports that Colorado could name a new coach this week, and barring a miracle from the Bayou, former Buffaloes RB Eric Bienemy appears to be the top candidate.

On Tuesday, the most likely option from athletic director Mike Bohn's A list, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, reportedly withdrew his name from consideration. He joins former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti, who withdrew last week, on the outside. LSU coach Les Miles and former CU coach Bill McCartney are the other two A list names, and a faction within the Colorado faculty has expressed concerns about McCartney's past use of his platform as coach to push is religious beliefs.

The setting and tenor of interim coach Brian Cabral's Tuesday press conference also suggests that Cabral is not a real option.

Based on the candidates known to have interviewed (McCartney, Cabral, Bienemy and former CU TE Jon Embree), that would leave Bienemy, the Minnesota Vikings' assistant head coach/RB coach, in the strongest position. Bienemy has the most momentum and now appears to have the backing of former Buffs players, who initially favored McCartney.

Two other names are also receiving increased consideration: Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain and Houston coach Kevin Sumlin. But Bienemy would seem to be a better choice than McElwain given his ties to the school, and Sumlin is considered a long shot.

          • More ESPN.COM rumors:

            Miles, Crowton not going anywhere
            LSU Tigers

Les Miles said on Wednesday that he is happy with his current job and that he is "not expecting to hear from any other school." Presumably this all but takes him out of the running for the Colorado job, if he ever really was a factor, but what happens if Michigan does come calling? He could always claim that his comment was based on the schools that currently have openings.

Offensive coordinator Gary Crowton also put an end to speculation about his future, saying that he has no interest in the Louisiana-Lafayette job, for which he supposedly is going to interview. Crowton did say he has had calls about others jobs (presumably as a coordinator) but has not pursued any. "I plan on being back at LSU next year," he said.

While not offering an explicit endorsement, Miles did not indicate that Crowton's job or role was in jeopardy. "I did see progress," Miles said. "I certainly have enjoyed the efforts our entire offensive staff has gone through. I think our offense has gotten better and our team is maturing."
            Locksley's hot seat
            New Mexico Lobos

No one can figure out how Mike Locksley is still gainfully employed, given his 2-22 record and two embarrassing off-the-field incidents last season. But as of Tuesday night, athletic director Paul Krebs still had not made a decision about Locksley's future. "It's reasonable you will be hearing from us soon," Krebs told KOB-TV in Albuquerque.

The holdup apparently is Locksley's contract, which has four years remaining and a reported buyout of $1.46 million. In fact, last week SportsbyBrooks.com reported that a rival Mountain West athletic director said that Locksley would remain on the job because the university's board of regents, the state of New Mexico and the athletic department's Lobo Club would not authorize funds for a buyout. (Kinda makes you wonder if Krebs, who signed Locksley to that deal, might be in trouble as well.)

Tom Dienhart of Yahoo! Sports says that former Lobos coach Dennis Franchione may be waiting to see if the job opens up. If true, that would give Krebs a big name to dangle in front of boosters in an attempt to drum up buyout money. (Of course, Franchione would also probably cost a pretty penny.)

            • As Scottie mentioned above, the race for Colorado looks like its down to 3 possibilities:

Eric Bieniemy, former Running back for CU...and Assistant Coach for the Vikings
Jon Embree, former TE for CU...current TE's coach for the Redskins
Jim McElwain, current OC for Alabama

Though the general feeling is that Colorado wants to stay with someone who has either played for Colorado or worked as a coach at Colorado which means it will be most likely Bieniemy or Embree.

John Denver would have made a fabulous coach for the Buffs. Damn plane.

This is horrible news. Who will teach Chris Cooley and Fred Davis how to fumble now?

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

One of my favorite thing to do is read coaching bios and how they get churched up. For example you won't read one about Embree that doesn't mention him coaching Tony Gonzalez, like he was instrumental in Tony's 8 Pro-Bowls prior to Embree arriving in KC.

                              • Dave Wannestedt out at Pittsburgh. I think this is a horrible decision by Pitt, whose AD is the same guy that canned Frank Solich at Nebraska, only to have his best fallback position be Bill Callahan. Part of me thinks spite played a role in this decision. If West Virginia went to a BCS game this year instead of UConn, it would probably be more palatable for Pitt brass.
