Can you imagine anyone you know in any setting saying "Get back to me when you have higher percentage of current recommend holders." Come on!Originally posted by DU Ute View PostSo what's the verdict? Did you really mean what you said? Troll or no troll?
I threw the first post out there as a joke and didn't expect it to go further. After that I couldn't help myself. My bad.

Yeah, I can. I think that's the problem with this kind of trolling.Originally posted by jay santos View PostCan you imagine anyone you know in any setting saying "Get back to me when you have higher percentage of current recommend holders." No way. I don't know anyone who would say such a thing. I'm not talking about internet personalities. I'm talking someone you know personally and can give their name, address, and telephone number.Originally posted by DU Ute View PostYeah, I can. I think that's the problem with this kind of trolling.

This is a tired thread, so I'm sorry for posting again. I wanted to clarify my position on the U.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostThe problem is that if Jay was trolling or bluffing, what he posted is (I hate to say) kind of characteristic for him.
I've been posting on BYU message boards/email groups for 13 years now. I'm a die hard, geeky BYU fan. My preference for my home message board is to talk BYU FB and BB with other die hard BYU fans. I don't enjoy the interaction with Ute fans a lot on the subject of BYU sports because the perspective then becomes BYU vs Utah. That's a very small aspect of BYU sports discussion, and I only enjoy that aspect of it as it is done proportionately. I've trolled Ute fans for years for fun. But I don't go on Ute boards. I figure if they're dropping in on BYU boards, they deserve to get trolled. I don't think Ute fans are beer guzzling heathens. If you knew me, you would know I wouldn't even consider calling someone a beer guzzling heathen an insult in the first place. Personally I think self-righteousness is a bigger sin than drinking beer. My take on the rivalry BYU self-righteousness vs Utah heathenness is that it's ridiculous and it's fueled 90% by false characterizations of misunderstandings of the other group. Why? Because that's what you do in a rivalry.
When this board was formed a whined a lot about the equal treatment given to Utes. For many, CB was where they talked sports and CG was where they talked religion. For me, I was booted off CB and CG was all I had to talk BYU sports with other BYU sports fans. I whined and still do about this board now being a co-op of BYU/Utah and since the formation of CUF, Ute fans have joined in hordes, and now the sports area is pretty balanced Utah-BYU. That makes the discussion become Utah vs BYU on everything. No offense, but I don't give a shit what Ute fans think of Brandon Davies or Jimmer. It just becomes lame to me that everything we talk about here is a combined perspective BYU and Utah. I know I'm a minority in this, and I'll get over it. But that explains some of my Ute trolling.

If it makes you feel better, I don't give a shit about Davies or Jimmer either, except for 2 or 3 times this year when i plan to break their legs."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

Jay, I have always liked you and I am glad you are here, but I think you mischaracterize things a bit. Other than rivalry week, I don't think the discussion of BYU sports is always colored by the Ute perspective or that the Ute fans degrade the discussion of BYU sports (or vice versa).Originally posted by jay santos View PostWhen this board was formed a whined a lot about the equal treatment given to Utes. More importantly perhaps, the Ute posters here are terrific contributors to all of the discussions (sports, religion, politics, etc.) and this place would have much less value without them."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Thanks for clarifying. I haven't read your posts much because until this board came along, I almost never went to CB even though I am technically a donor there (from a long time ago). I was one of the first to join CG but didn't find the verbal fisticuffs there very appealing and got interested in other things anyway. I finally started going back there at Archea's invitation, but that was only a month or two before this board started. So it has taken me a while to get used to the culture here.Originally posted by jay santos View PostThis is a tired thread, so I'm sorry for posting again. I wanted to clarify my position on the U.

I had never seen you as a merry prankster and had seen your fairly blunt complaints about the presence of Ute fans here, so I frankly had no reason to believe you were kidding below. I don't like trolling on a board like this where we all "know" each other to some extent and are trying, for the most part, to avoid being childish. My own preference is to be straightforward, generally to be nice to people, and make it clear when I am kidding. (That is not intended to be self-righteous, only to be clear about what I try yo do. I think people can behave here any way they want as long as they are willing to own what they do and say.) But now that I know you do like to play with trolling occasionally I will not take your posts seriously when they seem over the top.
By the way, the BYU-Utah fan ratio here seems to be about 75%-25%, so I don't know that you have much to complain about. And I really don't spend much time worrying about BYU fans being self-righteous. I've been posting on Cougar and Ute boards since about 1998 (heaven help me) so I think those who've seen me around know that.Last edited by LA Ute; 12-02-2009, 10:29 AM.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

LA, I am no fan of trolling either but in this case it was at least at little bit delightfully ironic ... Jay believes in the total depravity of all mankind. Jay is almost the world's first "TULIP" Mormon. How is it possible that Jay's theology is not well known anymore? His is my favorite theology on the board (even though my theological views often differ significantly).Originally posted by LA Ute View PostI had never seen you as a merry prankster and had seen your fairly blunt complaints about the presence of Ute fans here, so I frankly had no reason to believe you were kidding below.Last edited by pelagius; 12-02-2009, 11:19 AM.

I disagree with you to your point on the constant BYU vs Utah discussion, but I agree there are good Ute posters here. I might continue to whine on occasion, but it's because my preference to talk BYU BB and FB is a BYU sports board. That's not what your aim was here, and I understand. I agree with you on the overall contribution, you've created a great board here.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostJay, I have always liked you and I am glad you are here, but I think you mischaracterize things a bit.
