I thought the original post was funny. For such a bitter soul that brother of yours has a damn fine sense of humor!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

        Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

My dad was a ticket holder from the days of Wilson until we moved out of the state in 1986.

Both my wife and I graduated from the Y.

I grew up loving BYU sports. When I was a kid, I would pray at halftime when BYU was losing. God would get an earful from me after the game when he didn't answer my prayers.

I also really liked Utah, when they weren't playing BYU. They were always that cute little school from Salt Lake. I remember thinking "good for them" when they would win. Similar to the way I feel about Utah State and Weber State now. I started to dislike Utah when they started to beat BYU and the bandwagon fans showed up. I strongly believe Utah has about 7 or 8 thousand fans and the other 20 thousand fans come around after a good year.

My fandom has waned a bit. Losses don't cause the anguish that they used to. In the past, I couldn't even read a newspaper for a week or listen to the radio after a loss. I don't like anything about BYU other than the football team. The place could go up in flames for all I care as long as they can salvage the football team. I have tried to cheer for other teams in addition to BYU, but I can't seem to get any feelings behind it.

For the record, I took Utah at +7.5, but hope I lose that bet.

I wrote a long epistle detailing my fanhood and posted it for about twenty minutes. After a bit I decided it was too long and boring and so this is my revised version:

I grew up in the shadow of the U but was a Y fan. I experienced many of the behavioral cliches that are usually attributed to Ute fans. These solidified my status as a BYU fan. Most of my siblings as well as myself went to BYU. In spite of my dad being a U grad we have had season tickets since 1981 and have had the same block of seats since they expanded LES back in '82. I attend as many away games as work and finance allow.

I cried almost all night when the Cougars lost to UTEP in 85' and everytime I would fall asleep I would dream that it was not true, minus the crying the same thing happened in 88 when the Basketball team lost to UAB before we got to #1. My mother woke us up every morning by saying "Rise and Shout Cougars." My parents both worked at BYU. Lavell would talk to my dad and I for a few minutes every time we saw him on campus. I spent more time on that campus than probably any place but home (family nights at the Wilk). And of course I went to almost every game 82-99 in football, basketball and about half of the baseball games.

That is why I love the Cougars, in spite of the obnoxious fans and the stupid honor code, and the ridiculous institutional decisions that are sometimes made.

I have tried to not love the Cougars. But I cannot help it. It is a part of who I am.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock
