Why would he lie? Also I have only seen the story once and that was 3 years ago right after his recruitment. Also you say the situations are different, the only difference is the reaction of the coaches. Even if he had previously committed to Whit and then retracted that commitment Whit has no reason to act like a jackass.*Banned*

It wasn't right after his recruitment. He told the story then and when Monson did the piece on him. I believe it has come up in other stories as well.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostWhy would he lie? Also I have only seen the story once and that was 3 years ago right after his recruitment. Also, that isn't what happened he committed to Utah and kept that commitment until the last minute.
What Unga did would be similar to me accepting a job offer and on the day before signing the contract calling the employer up and telling them I am going to a rival company. I also call up the rival company and tell them, I am going with my original plan to go to their rival. I am not telling the same thing to the 2 companies and I shouldn't expect the same reaction.
I have talked to enough people who I trust to believe that Unga's telling of this story isn't 100% accurate. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

Because it is a conference award. On top of that, Wide played very little the first few games because of Asiata. And, on top of all of that, the best comparisons between players is what they did against common opponents. That is why I focused on the conference and it is why the Conference POY awards focuses on the conference.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostPlease take this to the Wide vs Unga thread. By the way, Harvey only played 1 half against New Mexico because he injured his ankle. Why not look at the total package as well, Harvey is averaing 96 yards per game, Wide 82. Why just conference games?

He is a back that you can give the ball too 25-30 times per game.
Wide's performance in the TCU game is huge because it is the biggest game of the year for the Utes and he was a non-factor. Unga on the other hand did show up in the biggest game of the year. Unga wasn't the reason BYU lost that game, he is probably the only reason it wasn't a bigger blowout. Wide played a huge part in the Utes losing the game to TCU.
I'm actually surprised you aren't pushing Unga for OPOY over Dalton.
Sorry, still not a fan of the logic. Wide did not play a huge part in the reason the Utes lost. Wide could have had 100+ yards in that game, like Unga did, and the Utes would have still lost by several touchdowns.
I just find it funny coming from you Funk that there is a Ute that has put up better numbers across the board (more yardage, better average and more TDs) compared to someone else and you pick the other person. Thats fine...I just don't buy it and the numbers don't agree with your flawed logic.
Now, there are still 2 games to go in the season...and if Unga performs well and Wide underperforms, then my judgment changes...but until then, Wide has been the better back during the conference season.

That's actually a relatively-normal strategy for people who are being heavily-recruited by multiple firms. Commit to both and lead them both on, then pick the one that would treat you best, breaking the other one's heart in the meantime. According to the story, the way Harvey determined who would treat him best was by testing how they'd treat him if he went to the other school. Obviously he got the info he was looking for.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostWhat Unga did would be similar to me accepting a job offer and on the day before signing the contract calling the employer up and telling them I am going to a rival company. If you should hate anyone in this situation, according to this story, at least, it's the coach whose true colors were uglier than the other's.Visca Catalunya Lliure

He was 17. He was going back and forth. Everyone knew he was. Kids have a hard time saying no directly to someone's face, especially shy humble Polynesian kids. Reynolds was obviously a big influencer and he was back and forth between Utah and BYU during this time period. You're the one that's still bringing it up not him. Time to let go, funk. This is saying a lot more about you than Unga.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostIt wasn't right after his recruitment. He told the story then and when Monson did the piece on him. So if we are playing the Wide split time with Asiata card we need to play the Unga sat out the 2nd half against New Mexico, Wyoming, and UNLV as well as the 4th quarters against TCU, and Colorado State.Originally posted by UteStar View PostSorry, still not a fan of the logic. How do you feel about Sealver Siliga?Originally posted by mpfunk View PostIt isn't just because he told Kyle no. It is him bringing up the story in the first place and repeated the story over and over again. I also think the story is either complete bullshit or Unga isn't very smart. Of course, Whittingham and Reynolds are going to react differently, the situations were not the same.
Not to mention, how are we to know that Unga's story is even legit. He knows that he can keep telling the story and no one on the Utah side is going to ever answer it, because it will make them look bad.A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life. - Mohammad Ali

I don't think there are clear qualifications in the MWC for the award. Your best bet for making the All-MWC team is to go to New Mexico.Originally posted by JohnnyLingo View PostWhich brings us to the root of the problem: what are the qualifications for the award?
Best individual player? Best player on the best team? Some combination of the two?
In 2007, Hall (not Max) won the award, proving that you don't have to be on a team that dominated the conference.
In 2008, Austin Collie did not win, indicating that even if you are easily the best player in the conference, the award should go to a senior.
If Dalton wins this year (which would clearly NOT be undeserved), there are officially no guidelines for picking the POY. If the MWC is trying to be at least a little consistent, they should give it to Max Hall because he is the best senior.

FWIW, Wide wasn't splitting time with Asiata. Asiata was the back. On top of that, we are talking about who would win the Conference player of the year...that only counts conference games so that is why there is no mention of the preseason.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostSo if we are playing the Wide split time with Asiata card we need to play the Unga sat out the 2nd half against New Mexico, Wyoming, and UNLV as well as the 4th quarters against TCU, and Colorado State.
OK, so Unga sat some quarters out...and he averaged less yards per carry. So, what was your point?
And yes, that was a bit snarky!
