  • Harbaugh and Carroll: Was it Classless or payback??

I have mixed feelings about this. At first I thought it was classless of Harbaugh to go for 2 after he pretty much destroyed USC. I also thought it was lame of him to take the limelight away from the team performance and put it squarely on himself. I found it very selfish..

But, I also looked back over the years of USC dominance and all the blasts USC and Carroll have taken to many teams. All the running up of scores to anyone with no respect..

So, I dislike Harbaugh's decision, when he already pounded USC, I also take a little pleasure knowing USC and Carroll have gotten a taste of, "What goes around comes around"...

It was Harbaugh's way of saying "I will not be in the Pac 10 more than 1 more year, I may even leave after this year."

Its not like this was a little league game, or even that they were playing some weak DIAA program.

This is USC. P10 Champions 7 years running, and arguably the most dominant program in football the last 10 years.

I don't believe one can RUTS at that level. I say suck it up and play ball next time.

Summon Goatnapper! He will tell you there is no such thing as RUTS. He converted me to this point of view years ago. It took a few waterboarding sesions, but I got there.

Who cares? Why is it classless? If you are on offense, your job is to score points.

I am way more offended by SC's declining defense this season and Matt Barkley's increasingly boneheaded and unskillful play. Stanford scoring one extra point on a 2pt conversion made zero difference yesterday.

I did get a kick out of the Stanford players that were on camera yelling "Fight on, SC." That is basically a compliment to the SC program. These teams are so excited to beat SC that their emotions get the best of them, even when they are clearly beating a poor SC team. The last time Stanford beat SC, they beat a pretty good team. This year's squad turned out to be pretty weak, in fact probably shouldn't even be ranked. Yet Washington, Oregon fans storm the field. Stanford players celebrate and gloat. After 7 years of winning, it probably feels really good to finally dethrone the champs.

All Stanford has to do is want to and it can dominate the Pac 10 beyond your wildest nightmares. Where else can a kid serious about football get a degree to match Harvard and Yale and play in a DI conference (in my opion, FWIW, the top DI conference)? Stanford has more money than God. Harbaugh should just say to administrators, "Look, I want to stay, but help me out. Let's become the Duke of college footaball. Here's what I need from you..."

Running it up against SC is all about recruiting. Harbaugh want to say to recruits, "So, you are thinking about SC? You know we beat them 55-21 in the coliseum, right?

In theory yes, in practice it would seem that Stanford administration isn't interested in becoming a sports power. I will be surprised if Harbaugh is at Stanford beyond when Luck is there as QB.

Stanford played in the very first Rose Bowl in 1902. 107 years and only 5 Rose Bowl titles later, I think it is fair to assume that if it were possible, Stanford would have very much preferred to dominate the Pac 10 and win more Rose Bowls.

                            Your reasoning is circular, counselor.

If you only win 5 of them in almost 110 years, then either Stanford can't dominate the Pac 10 or it can, but just chooses not to do such.

I suppose I am open to reasons why Stanford doesn't care to dominate football, as long as those reasons explain why Stanford seems to care about dominating every other collegiate sport, as evidenced by its perennial Director's Cup rankings.
