What Utah does has less of an effect on BYU's recruiting than Bronco Mendenhall. He limits the type of recruits BYU goes after with his recruiting of Peter Priesthoods.

I'm not saying that that is a bad thing - Mendenhall does need to keep in mind that he represents BYU which has the honor code in place - but I would say that the kind of recruits that would be persuaded to choose Utahover BYU based on BCS appearances are not kids that would go to BYU in the first place.

I think it is a bad thing. I want BYU to win football games, not conduct firesides.

I think you have football to high on the priority list. Do you see how good of blogger Quinn Gooch is? Could he have achieved that if he went to a school that didn't place friends above football?

A bad thing that Utah wins bowl games? A bad thing that Mendenhall recruruits a particular type of kid who happens to play football? A combination of both?

I can understand it being any single or combination of the above; however, I still believe that the kids who choose Utah over BYU because of a Utah appearance in a BCS bowl isn't the type of kid who would go to BYU in the first place and that is on Mendenhall.

I dont care whether Utah wins bowl games. I was responding to your comment about Bronco wanting to recruit only certain players. It hurts the program when you discount talent because they might want to have some beer during their stay.

Not sure what the effect of bowl games is on recruiting.

BYU is traditionally crappy in bowl games. Utah has a great winning streak going, including a BCS victory. I don't see an appreciable gap between the two year after year in the recruiting.

Notre Dame has had a horrible bowl record over the past decade. Their recruiting classes always blow away BYU and Utah.

                Understood and agreed.

If I were a betting man, I wouldn't count on the Utes winning their 8th consecutive bowl game. A win would just be the icing on an already terrific season.

I honestly believe BYU struggles in bowl games because of the approach. A few friends who played for Edwards during the glory years told me that he saw it as a reward for a great season, rather than as another game which needed to be won. And with the recent revealing of his priorities, it would seem that Mendenhall may think the same.

As for Notre Dame, when you're the most storied program in the history of college football, you get what you want, when you want it. ND will always be "the program" of college football.

I haven't provided an answer to the poll, as my response depends on whomever I happen to be thinking about when "Utah" is mentioned. If it's my daughter, or most of the Ute fans on this board, I'd honestly like Utah to win and embarrass Bama. If it's SU or any number of jerks on Utefans (and I don't lump SU with those simpletons as he's certainly in a class by himself), I hope Bama destroys the Utes. I'm quite vexed by this dichotomy.

I agree. If I'm talking to Solon, MRD, Fiyero, 8BR, or the citrus-smelling OrangeUte, then Utes all the way. If we're talking SU, UteStar, or IPU, then Roll Tide!

See SU... They don't hate for it.

I was going to invite you to hang out with me and my sons in the Fish Creek area next summer, but you can forget it now.

I'm pretty sure that this is the first year of the four-year cycle. So we're off to a good start.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah
