    bcriddle perspective on Bronco

    and BYU future.

    http://www.cougarboard.com/noframes/...tml?id=4996057

Perhaps critical fans and media will be the motivation for a NC.

This commentary also is great for firing up the "defenders of the faith" fan base.

I was confused by Criddle's assertion that Bronco is "obsessed" with "constant improvement."

Glad to know BYU will win a NC in the next few years. Sweet! I am going to favorite this thread, along with brazilcoug's post about the Jazz.

Look at Rise and Shouts post saying, "let the church say amen". I hope you LDS Ute fans take note. You are not part of the church if you aren't with "The Program".

        Such the cynic...

While I'm skeptical, I'm glad he at least has it as his goal. And is making some progress towards it. Don't you find it remarkable that he has had continued improvements in recruiting, even while his in-state rival has had their best run in history?

I would think this would be music to the ears of those who think Bronco puts football fifth on his list.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I think we have a really weird crew. I like that Bronco hates the fans, most are dickheads. But his inspired "prospectus" is entirely too much. Basketball can't come soon enough in some ways.

It is a really interesting defense BC offers. I mean he leaves Bronco the very achievable out of accomplishing a MNC. Clearly, Mendenhall can get some players to genuinely believe in him.

Triple D said it best, everything is just so hard for the guy. But the drama makes it a little more exciting through October. By November it begins to drag.

Not to Ben C: quote his record and let that do the talking not some prospectus that most sane people don't believe is achievable. How about we stay within 4 TDs of TCU before we start talking about an 8 year plan for a NC, whadyathink?

Everyone who was there when TCU and BYU resembled Ron Jeremy and Jenna Jameson, rest assured back to back shellackings are part of the 8 year plan. Just hold on, hold on...the light will come. IN THREE YEARS!

Good point. Bronco's worst enemies are the "defenders of the faith" who take his words and run with them. Remember, recruits were going to recruit us. Remember we were going to win with missionaries. Remember we only need to recruit the pure in heart.

In fact Bronco does figure he will succeed with his plan. I hope he does, but I do see him adjust. Note the number of non-LDS recruits increasing.

Bronco understands winning and getting all the fans onboard is the most important thing he needs to do. Meanwhile, let those who want to purge Zion continue their rants.

Well I know it fired me up. I don't dare not kick in my 1,000 a year plus the tickets. At least not until the 10 year plan is done. I just hope the "real" fans don't kick me out before that time.

By the way, if I haven't said so, I am not so down on Bronco as the group he fires up.

I have often said that Bronco is most similar to Rick Majerus than any coach out there. I think Rick got to the title game in year 8. I would think SeattleUte could tell us about it, but he goes to the Opera instead of Ute games.

I agree with you that his ardent defenders miss the mark. Evaluating head coaches is relatively easy: wins and losses.

Well, he's got 3 more years to please the BYU fans. Then the fans and media will be on his case relentlessly. In the meantime, he's a fool for pissing off BYU fans.

Bronco is absolutely no fool. I think he has calculated correctly what he has to do to fill the stands.

                          1) Win and indicate things will get better. That keeps the football fans fired up. Criticism and talking about the team is better than apathy.

                          2) Talk up the BYU mission. That insulates him against any problems that come along. Bronco has had some players fall from grace. No one is screaming about it though, are they.

The problem he hadn't figured on is Utah and TCU being so good. He knows he has to address that.

                            What do you guys think?

                            1. I think Ben Criddle was a walk on that Bronco gave a scholarship to.

                            2. I think Bronco's being an idiot about this stuff. An energetic fan base is a big asset for a program. He's acting like he wants to kill it.

I wonder if, when reading all those "business management books" that Bronco allegedly read, did he ever come across a chapter that talked about pissing off shareholders? Or the art of managing subordinates? Or the importance of PR?

I know that in my limited business experience, I have found those principles to be pretty important. But hey....that's just me.

A saavy leader learns to use his subordinates to the betterment of the organization.

When productivity falls off and he goes through a losing season or two, he is going to wish he had made more of an effort to amass goodwill.
