I remember a conversation I had with Crowton in the hallway at church one August Sunday in 2005. I said "I think BYU will be pretty good if the defense can step up." He said "When was the last time BYU had a good defense?"

Felt, Schmidt, Mendenhall, Hill. It isn't as much coaching as it is talent level.

Also tonight I went to do some shopping and get gas, I tuned into 1160 and remembered why I stopped listening 3-4 years ago. Listening the the guy that looks like kcCoug and his crew talk about how BYU can still win the conference and we have a great recruiting class coming in is beyond old.

I think Bronco has taken this team about as high as he can take it. 10 win years are great, and if we win the Bell Helicopter Bowl this year we will get to 10 again this year.

The minute Bronco started his second half interview with "well, we're not going to change anything, we just need to play sound football" (or something to that effect), I knew the game was over.

Ha! In his interview with ESPN Gameday Radio on Friday, he said he was approaching this like it was any other conference game. I wanted to think he was posturing, but apparently he was being pretty candid.

For some reason, this one doesn't bother me as much as FSU. TCU is a dang good football team. They should have run the table last year and this year, they're only better. Next year, they're only going to be better. They're in for at least a few years of 80s BYU-style conference dominance.

I like Hall, but he lost this game for us. I don't know if it's his coaching or what, but he played scared tonight. He plays better when he quicksnaps and gets into a rhythm, but it took him and the coaches a few quarters to figure that out. He was playing like he was scared to death of where the rush would be coming from and was trying to read it before the snap. Which only seems to make our line and everyone else tight. He was scared.

Hughes is a freak. Their whole D-line was stellar and it wasn't just our O-line that made them that way. I'm curious to see the game on TV (although I don't know if I can sit through it), but it seemed like every time they got a hand on Hall, it was a sack--there was no shaking any tackles. Plus, they're wicked fast. I remember mentioning to my dad after one near-sack that it's pretty sad when their D-lineman are faster than your QB...by a lot.

I also put a lot of this on Bronco. Out-executing can only take you so far. Maybe I'm a succor for punishment, but his postgame comments encouraged me a little bit. Maybe he's rethinking his philosophy?

I'm not seeing anything from Utah that makes me think that game's an automatic loss. We're still a decent football team. TCU's in another tier right now. And we probably need to get used to that, as fans.

Yup. While I won't be defending Hall like I had after this game, I don't think I can pin the loss on him. When he has less than two seconds to throw the ball, and the routes that are called take more than two seconds to develop, not much more he can do.

Why we didn't run the ball more earlier is beyond me. Why we try to run laterally against a defense as fast as TCU is beyond me. Why we didn't run the WR screen that I thought we put in for this game to counter TCU's speed and aggressiveness on defense is beyond me.

This only really scratches the surface of my criticism of the offense, but the bulk of my issues is with the defense. I'm still trying to calm myself down about that.

While Utah may not have the weapons TCU has, they have shown an ability to better prepare and adjust than BYU has. When Utah has clearly been the better team, they've won by a lot. When BYU has clearly been the better team, BYU has won closely. When the teams are about equal, Utah has won. It isn't because of talent, but it is because of preparation. And it is really starting to piss me off.

I think BYU needs to run it straight at Hughes. The best way to beat speed is to negate it by running right at it. Plus, our big fat lineman could wear him down a bit by run blocking as opposed to backing up and absorbing his rush. We need quick hitting run plays, not runs out of the shotgun. Pack everyone in and pound it.

I've heard that strategy mentioned in an upcoming NFL game as well. Go after their best defensive lineman to try and negate them early.

I know you can never put the blame on a single play, but in BYU's case, when they get down early to a better team, they tend to fold. In the FSU game, it was after FSU scored and BYU went the length of the field and Chambers fumbles inside the FSU 10 yard line. FSU takes over and marches the length of the field and makes it 14-0, taking the air out of BYU's balloon. I believe the same thing happened yesterday. TCU is held on their first possession and BYU takes the ball and makes progress by running the ball. On 2nd and 2, rather than do what BYU did to move the ball, they decide to throw and get sacked. Now it's 3 and 7 and could maintain the short momentum they had. Punt and TCU gets a TD, again letting the air out of the balloon.

Run if you are avg. 4-5 per carry. Keep the ball out of the opponents' possession if you know your defense isn't that good. I put the TCU debacle at the feet of Anae for not running the ball more early in the game. Especially at Hughes.

What philosophy gave you encouragement? He's been there 5 years and he talks the same talk year in and year out. Just curious what philosophy gives you hope.
