Liked I mentioned, last night was the first time I had ever seen a match. I'm not sure I'll ever become a huge fan, but I am a big fan of George St. Pierre. That guy was awesome. Kick ass, shake hands, and then go home.


Maybe this has already been said, but I actually was impressed his opponent (his name escapes me) was able to go the distance.

Tiago Alves is the guy's name and I was as impressed with his classiness in defeat as I was with GSP's classiness in victory.

I don't like GSP. But it's hard not to give him his due. The guy all around is amazing. No weaknesses in his game. There's nobody left in his division that can challenge him. They said last night he gets the winner of Kampmann and Swick. See...nobody left to challenge him. Though I don't know if him going up is smart. Much like Penn going up to fight him. It's a different game fighting 15-20 lbs outside your division with someone who makes his home at that weight.

I read that they took him to a hospital to get a precautionary CAT scan right after the fight.

Both that and the fact that Henderson said that he knew Bisping was out after the first punch made for some interesting discussion of legal permission to be battered at my house.

I think the ref was too far away and couldn't get there in time to stop it, based on the angle I see. That second punch was the most incredibly brutal thing I think I have ever seen.

It gets hard to argue with people who claim that UFC is just human dogfighting when stuff like that happens. That's how people get killed on Friday nights at the bar. It should never happen in a fight with a ref.

To be fair, the ref was in no position to stop Hendo from dropping the second bomb. Maybe that was his fault by not being in the correct position and behind the action but regardless there is no way he could have prevented it otherwise. It happened way too fast for him to intervene.

And for what it's worth, Henderson also retracted his statement he made in the octagon at the post fight news conference saying he didn't know that he was unconscious and wished Bisping a good recovery.

Agreed and I think UFC has a long history of being safer than boxing due to how quickly they stop the fights. That's the argument I've made with people who tell me that they think the sport should be banned. But that second shot he takes while already unconscious is as dangerous as can be. Totally defenseless and already head injured. UFC has to be very careful with things like that. They usually are, but it will only take one big mistake to set them back years.

Herb was very late in stopping the Mir fight, what the hell did he expect Mir to do? He was stuck the fight was over.

Henderson vs Bisping was different because Mazzagatti didnt have time to get over there before Hendo landed that big blow. You have to have the instinct to jump on an injured opponent so they dont recover, thats what Hendo did its up to the ref to stop hte fight.

That apology made me lose all respect for Dana and Brock. A forced apology is dishonest. One of the things I like about fighting is the raw emotion. You can't expect a guy that just got done fighting to act professionally.

I love it too but I am concerned that the biggest headline event in some time turned out to be almost as much WWE as MMA. While I appreciate a good knockout as much as the next guy, I also enjoy tactical match ups of different styles that go the distance. I loved the GSP/Alves fight because, while Alves got worked, I had looked forward to seeing what GSP's grappling would do to Alves' lower body striking - and it was amazing to see somebody so good at taking a guy down.

It may not come as a surprise that my favorite fighter is Lyoto Machida.

When I started watching, I came in with a lot of preconceived notions about WWE-style promoting and unrestrained bloodfests. What I ended up seeing (I forget which UFC it was) was a fantastic mental and physical sport , and, more importantly, the sportsmanship and respect of the fighters that night convinced me that they were legitimate athletes and not overhyped maniacs. That was important to a guy who had no idea what was going on. If UFC 100 night had have been my first night, I'm not sure there would have been a second.

Dana had to make Brock do it. What Brock failed recognize in his raw emotion is that he disrespected a major sponsor. I think there is some truth though to what he said in that coming from an employer where he had to do those things to sell PPV buys. That's no doubt ingrained by now. I also like that he owned up to being a sore loser. Nothing wrong with that.

Like Niku said, for the casual viewer this even could have turned a lot of people off. There was no doubt a number of first time viewers. Part of that apology and Dana going off is damage control. The sport only grows and thrives with new fans. I am sure that there were plenty that saw the flying birds, the getting into Mir's face, and the comment about getting onto his wife (I had no idea that Sable was his wife), turned plenty of people off. It made me wince some too.
