Panda gets market value, although I still think its a little high. 5 for 95 is too much for him, unless you get to the postseason. The Giants actually told him they would go to $100 and he still went to Boston.

Hanley at 5 for 90 to play LF at Fenway is an absolute joke. Not sure what Boston is thinking.

The Giants need to go get Donaldson from the shitty A's now. My guess however is they end up with Chase Headley instead.

Sabermetrics have saved his career. The last two years he has a WAR of 4.7 and 5.5. I was thinking he was mid 30s but he is only 31 as well.

I wish I could count how many times that Canadian bastard choked in key spots for the Dodgers.

Yeah 5.5 bWAR and 5.3 fWAR was basically a career year for him last year. But even before the last two years he was putting up 2 wins a year, so I don't know that washed up is right. He's also graded very well in pitch framing and that gives him added value. But he'll start that five year deal at 32 and catchers always age quicker than other positions. If he could keep having 3-5 win years the K would be worth it, but I just don't think there's much chance of that.

I think Sandoval realizes his future is as a DH. Agree on Ramirez. Isn't he a clubhouse cancer too?

            • I'll miss Panda at third base for the Giants. I also hate seeing him on the Red Sox. Woof.

On the bright side, I can now publicly admit that he is really fat.

I hope he doesn't read this thread. I think he'd be shocked to find out he's fat.

                • It's a little surprising to me how gracious the local press and fans have been about Panda's departure. Pretty much everyone is just talking about the great memories he provided and the fun he brought to the clubhouse and fans, while wishing him well. Even during his slumps and slow start, of which there were many, he was always treated well here; I doubt he'll be given similar slack in Boston. The fact that his $100MM contract was only the second most important story to Boston fans yesterday should be a warning that he likely won't be as beloved in Beantown as he was here. I think he made a poor choice, but I suspect there are some in the back office that may be a bit relieved they're not going to be saddled with the tail end of a five-year contract.

                  • The Sox's lineup is bolstering up. Still worried about their pitching though. I know a lot of fans thought Lester would be coming back, but the Sox are inching closer to the luxury tax. Unless Henry doesn't care about the tax and wants to pony up, I still think Lester won't be coming back. Which makes me sad. I think he's a class act.

I agree that he made an odd choice. While Boston fans are diehard, they can also turn on you quickly. Big Papi is one of the few players who has remained beyond reproach in Boston.

S.F. fans are much more casual, which I think is a good thing for a player as long as management is invested in winning.

Plus, San Francisco is just a better city. Sorry, just being obvious.

More or less. But there was a time a few years ago when he was mired in a slump, and he kept blaming lots of things (eye problems, injuries, coming off steroids ). There was quite a bit of grumbling. There's no way he isn't retiring as a Red Sox, and he is as untouchable a player as any, but fans lose patience.

I hope Pablo gets a mild case of diabetes. Just severe enough to keep him from surpassing Wade Boggs as the best hitting 3rd Baseman in Red Sox History...
