It might be a good trade for both teams. It's pretty obvious that Weeden isn't the answer, so they have Richardson getting worn down in an offense with a decent o-line but no one decent at QB or receiver. Their defense isn't horrible. The jury is somewhat out on Indy. They're 1-1, but have already played two home games. Tennessee looks halfway decent, Houston is 2-0 but has struggled to get there. Then they're also playing the NFC West and the surprisingly good AFC West this year. I can see them going anywhere from 6-10 to 9-7. The pick they gave to Cleveland could be a mid-round first round pick or it could be in the top 10. They have receivers and a really good young QB. Their defense is atrocious.
If Cleveland ends up in the top 3, then they can land Bridgewater or Boyd. They can also trade back and load up on even more picks. If they're outside of the top 3, they can move up. I'm inclined to believe they're tanking for a QB and then will spend the other first round pick on a top WR prospect.
The Seahawks and to a lesser extent the Niners have shown the competitive advantage under the new CBA of having a lot of their key players on their rookie contracts. Mike Lombardi is loading up on high draft picks for this reason. I also didn't mention that I don't think the Colts could get someone as good as Richardson with their first rounder in 2014. Given that they already have a QB and good receivers, the trade makes a ton of sense for them. On the flip side, the Browns know they suck and for them Richardson makes the difference between going 4-12 and 6-10. 6-10 ain't going to get it done in the Bridgewater-Clowney-Boyd sweepstakes this year. It's a choice of keeping Richardson and settling on the #3 QB in the draft, or getting Bridgewater/Boyd (probably Boyd, Jacksonville looks like the runaway leader for Bridgewater's services) and landing another skill player in the mid first round.Part of it is based on academic grounds.
