ain't that the truth. my heart just falls way down to the middle of my gut whenever I think about it.

So long, Kid K, every time they hang Ks at Wrigley I'll think of you and how you used to fan 'em back in the day. Lots of great memories with you on the mound.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Wood just went out for the last time. It was a pretty moving moment for Cubs fans, and part of that is the thought of what could have been.

It really is unfortunate the Cubs couldn't get it done. It is also unfortunate that Dusty Baker destroyed Prior and Wood.

            • Everyone but Jeff Z is on the block:

The Cubs are letting teams know that nearly everyone but starter Jeff Samardzija is available, two high-ranking team officials told USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because of competitive reasons.

I wonder why Jeff is off limits but Castro isn't? Is it due to off the field stuff (there was that sexual assault allegation a while ago)? Is it his work ethic? Or is it that Theo feels he is overvalued? He isn't exactly a sabermatrician's dream, with his paltry walk rates, but he makes up for it. At age 21, playing shortstop, his OBP was 20 points above the league average, and his slugging was 40 points over.

Theo denies that Castro is on the block here:

The Cardinals could trade a bag of baseballs and the ghost of Mark Mulder for Starlin Castro, and it wouldn't even be the worst trade between the two teams.

                    • Time to bump this thread now that the Cubs are not losing 11 in a row.

12-4 in their last 16 games. Two sweeps in their last 4 series. Won or split their last 5 series. They're not going to the playoffs, but it is nice to see them playing better, and nice that there are three other teams in the NL with worse records.

So what do you do with Dempster? I would think that a contending team wouldn't mind picking up a pitcher with a 1.86 ERA and 33 consecutive scoreless innings. As much as I like him and would like to keep him, I think it may be best to see if we can get some quality youth in exchange for him.

I've always wondered about the strategy of trading a quality player to pick up a young player that you hope one day will be a quality player himself.

I don't necessarily disagree, but in this case, the quality player is 36 years old, and will likely be at least 38 before the Cubs can put together a serious case for being competitive, and will therefore have a pretty good shot at no longer being all that good. A quality player this year helps us reach 72 wins instead of 67, so in my mind it is not a bad idea to roll the dice and see if you can get a guy who in 2014 could maybe help us reach 95 wins instead of 91.

If Dempster were 32, I would be with you and say keep him.

                                Not to mention salary considerations.
