    Keeping the dream alive!

The M's are poised for a good season if guys like Smoak and Ackley finally start hitting like we've been promised they can.

      • When I walked into the movie theater, we were up 2-1 after having made a third out at home on that throw by Cano (when I texted you). When I got back into the car after watching the worst movie I've ever seen since the last Marvel movie I saw, the 710 post game hosts are going off about called balls and strikes. What the flip happened?

On the upside though, solid starting pitching tonight.

Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

If getting textual with Grace is a humblebrag, then the word has no meaning.

I don't think there's any chance of that. Both were very highly rated prospects being compared to Teixeira and Utley, respectively. Smoak is 27 and Ackley 26, and each has enough ABs in the bigs that the type of turn around it would take to reach that level is just out of the question. But I am interested to see if they could if they can rebound into productive players. Smoak was sent down last year to cut down his swing. He had that long stroke of a lot of power hitters, and was a good fastball hitter, but he had to ramp up so early to keep up with big league fastballs that he had no prayer of adjusting to offspeed stuff. When he came back up the swing looked more compact and quicker into the zone, but he became the world's biggest singles hitter as it seemed to zap his power. Swing looks even a little more compact from last year, but the power now seems to be coming back a little. Ackley's problems seemed to be mostly in his approach. His first year up he proved he could hit MLB pitching, but it's been straight downhill from there. He got sent back down last year as well, and absolutely ripped through AAA pitching. Kept hitting when he got called back up, and that seems to have continued into this year. He's gotten a lot more aggressive attacking pitches since his demotion last year. The two guys on offense I'm most interested in are Miller and Zunino. David Cameron tweeted that with Jose Reyes out Miller was possibly the best SS in the AL, and Gammons was saying people around spring training were calling him the best player most people had never heard of. If he could build on what was a solid debut last year, he could be in for a nice season. Has some issues on D though.

Also really interested in the young kids in the rotation. That rotation looks like shit right now, but when it's Felix-Iwa-Ramirez-Paxton-Walker in a couple months, that's a pretty interesting group. Ramirez looked very good the other night, and his big league sample when healthy is very strong for 22/23 years old. Love that straight change. Paxton continues to outperform his minor league performance in the bigs, and his stuff is just so good. He was hitting 97 in his first start, and that's some no joke velocity from a lefty starter. Curve is a real plus pitch too. Every time I watch him it's spooky how much his delivery/mechanics look like Andy Pettite with the highly leveraged arm angle and elongated release. Walker's secondary pitches still need some work but man that fastball is explosive and comes out so easy.

I'll be pretty happy if they can play .500 ball and HFN will finally admit what a huge baseball fan he is. That would be a successful season.

                • good win. Even though Felix was cruising and his pitch count was low I was still a bit surprised they gave him a shot at the 9th this early in the season.

                    • Paxton exits early. Potentially a lat strain.

                      • I would like to petition the MLB that the Mariners only play the Angels from here on out.

                              • Getting a bad feeling about this Walker situation. Like a Danny Hultzen kind of bad feeling. Ugh.
