No fucking clue what the M's are doing. Too many years of losing and missing out on free agents has made them way too desperate. There are also rumors they've discussed swapping their top pitching prospect (Taijuan Walker) and one of their young middle infielders (Franklin or Miller) for David Price. Price is obviously damn good, and Felix/Price/Ikawuma is a hell of a 1-2-3, but that's a steep price to pay.

Yankees have said no way they're going above 7 years at 170 and apparently they're sticking to it. He doesn't want to leave NY, so M's have to way overbid because he's not moving for a couple million a year. btw, ESPN with a different take:

After the visit, The New York Daily News reported the talks have broken down after agent Jay Z demanded 10 years and $252 million. One source familiar with Cano's situation told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick, however, that reports that talks with the Mariners have blown up or that Jay-Z overplayed his hand in a meeting with the Seattle brass Thursday night are "inaccurate.'' The same source added that Cano's negotiations over the past 48 hours have been "productive on all fronts'' with all teams involved.

A source said Cano went to Seattle believing that the Mariners would raise their offer. The Mariners, according to a source, were under the impression Cano flew to Seattle to finalize a deal.

ha. That is funny. M's are reportedly desperate for a star after too many years of too many empty seats. They were teased by Fielder a couple years ago, then narrowly missed out on both Hamilton and Cruz last year. They were apparently ready and willing to overpay for a marquee name, and Jay and Cano come to Seattle yesterday with assurances of an absolutely ridiculous offer valued at roughly $55mm more than what the Yankees are offering. So what does Jay-Z do? He demands another year at the same amount of money.

Yeah, he's really good. Over the last 4 seasons only Miguel Cabrera has a higher combined WAR. But 9 years at that cost for a guy who is already 31 is insane. The production on half that contract won't be remotely worth it.

Sources familiar with the negotiations between the Yankees and Cano told ESPNNewYork.com that the Yankees believe Seattle might be willing to offer Cano $200 million over eight years.
