There are also rumors they've discussed swapping their top pitching prospect (Taijuan Walker) and one of their young middle infielders (Franklin or Miller) for David Price. Price is obviously damn good, and Felix/Price/Ikawuma is a hell of a 1-2-3, but that's a steep price to pay.
I wouldn't have made the Cano deal, but I would definitely make that trade for Price. baseball-reference says 2016 is the earliest free agency year for him (Price), hell ya I take him even if it means for only two years (it's not like they're going to win otherwise).

I'd rather have Walker for the next 10 than Price for 2. Or better yet, Price would cost near $30mm over the next two, I'd much rather have Walker + free agent you could land for difference in their contracts (which is about $14.5mm per year).

      • $240mm is supposedly more than the combined payroll for the M's last 8 seasons.

Just checked. No way that's right. Payroll was $72mm last year.

          • What a terrible deal for the Mariners. As an A's fan, I like this deal.

Do I really need to explain the difference between overpaying for 2 years and overpaying for 10 years?

As for Jim Johnson, it is a 1 year commitment to him. The other option is Balfour, which requires giving him more than a 1 year deal.

                    • The Seattle Mariners have agreed to sign free agent closer Fernando Rodney to a two-year, $14 million deal, per multiple reports (Jonah Keri of Grantland first).

Rodney, 36, was unbelievable for the Rays in 2012 when he closed 48 games in 50 chances with a 0.60 ERA (641 OPS+!). He took a step backward last season, though, when he went 37 for 45 in save chances with a 3.38 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 82 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings. He was excellent in September, though, with a 0.82 ERA and 0.82 WHIP.

Rodney will slide in immediately as the Mariners closer in all likelihood, with Danny Farquhar and Tom Wilhelmsen getting setup duty.

Next up: overpaying for Nelson Cruz.
