I don't get the angst about the video going viral, and hurting the kid's reputation. It's not like it was a non-video report containing merely someone's opinion on whether or not they were flagrant fouls. It's "here's the video - judge for yourself".

I thought the fouls weren't horrible - I think #5 should have been a flagrant and possible ejection, but I think the people who made the video were mostly whining about some hard play by some big guys.

One thing to consider - the video was premeditated, which means the kid already had a reputation, and sure enough he didn't disappoint.

For me, the claims about the kid being a teddy bear were effectively countered by the smirk he had after he threw the kid to the floor.

If you don't want the internet to think you're a thug, don't act like one.
If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

Foul #5 was truly egregious, but most of #34's problem is that he has the athleticism of a sedated sloth.

All true, but he is still a kid. While fatty is a little thug on the court, I'm much more disappointed in the adults around him, including the refs and his own coach. If one of my kids pulled foul #5 and the following smirk, and the refs chose not to punish him, you can bet I would. Didn't his coach put him back in after that? And what are the refs doing? If they throw him out like they should have after #5, he might start to learn a lesson and the video is unremarkable and goes nowhere.

Instead now the poor kid is infamous. He earned the rep but it's a harsh punishment. Even growing up in the viral infoworld, most kids don't grasp the concept that any mistake you make could be blasted around the world in no time. Most adults don't even get that yet.

Apparently these fouls occurred in the first half. The coach said he pulled them (probably because they were in foul trouble and not to teach them a lesson) and between the two they only had one foul the second half.

The WIAA (the Washington HS Officials) released this statement a bit ago:

"WIAA statement concerning the Connell-Highland Basketball game that was played on Dec. 22nd:

The WIAA is currently working with the two schools, officials and Washington Officials Association on the situation. The WIAA has the utmost concern for the safety of the student-athletes and the welfare of the game."
This quote though by the School District's AD is a bit :

"My feeling is I bet you could go to 90% of any sporting event that has contact like basketball, football, whatever. You could probably go through any person's game film and pull these same or similar incidents out. This just happened to be a person did that and posted it online" said Steve Frucci, athletic director of the North Franklin School District.
BTW, if you guys didn't pick up on it that's BYU football commit Matt Hadley playing for Connell. And those two thugs were his linemen, the taller of the two an all-area selection.

That AD is an idiot. Somebody at the district should tell him STFU ASAP.

I'm disgusted that BYU would recruit anyone associated with this.

Who was angsting? My point was only that no one should think the kid is going unpunished. His punishment will be pretty significant. Much more so than a game ejection would have been. Does he deserve it? you can make that call.
                    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

I completely agree, except for the kid's reaction. There wasn't even a hint of concern about what his complete ineptitude was doing to the other kid. At least act concerned!
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

These must be the kids Bishop Vandelay coached in AAU.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I was hoping Art would chime in.

I could copy and paste his email.

Honestly the video was not as bad as I was expecting. I thought every clip was going to look like #5. Half of them looked like what we used to rationalize away with Araujo saying it's just the result of an impact of a guy who is a lot bigger/stronger on a smaller guy. Makes it look more egregious than it actually is.
