If he was a season's total of HRs short of 400 - 20-25+ - I'd argue that he shouldn't get in. But 398?

According to his numbers, he hit a HR every 20 at bats. He only played in about 25 games or so his last season when he was in Colorado. Had he played in half the games that year, he'd have 400 and would be a lock.

Now that his 15 year eligibility window is up, the BBWAA won't ever make the decision again. But I think the Veterans Committee will vote him in. And I won't be sad when that happens.
How do we know Murphy didn't cheat?

Well, we don't know for sure. But I'll always claim that he didn't because he was pretty much the same size when he retired as when he was a rookie.

Jack Morris is getting close. Craig Biggio will get in within 2-3 years.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Too close. He shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame. Biggio certainly belongs in the Hall of Fame.

If I was voting this past year, this would have been my ballot: Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Mike Piazza, Alan Trammell, Tim Raines

At least you're consistent with just going with performance on the field except not sure why no Sosa.

I think there really is some validity to the argument that if the writers aren't going to put guys like Bonds, Clemens, Sosa in because of "bad character" and "cheating" then why not put a guy like Murphy in the HOF by the same reasoning? Sure he doesn't quite deserve it on statistical merits but Dale Murphy was sort of the face of Major League Baseball for a few years (because of TBS and the Braves), had consecutive MVPs, and has done great things off the field.

What is your problem with Alan Trammell. Unlike Dale Murphy, he was great at playing defense at his position, not average to below average being bolstered by a sham award, the Golden Glove.

                    Trammell: career dWAR 22.0
                    Murphy: career dWAR -7.6

I think Sosa is borderline. There is enough bad in his career to no make him a clear cut hall of famer. I do think that when you have a borderline player that everyone knows used steroids, they shouldn't make the cut. Guys like Clemens and Bonds aren't borderline, so they should be in.

                        http://firebrandal.com/2013/01/18/j-...nd-perception/

Interesting article comparing perceptions of players.....JD Drew and Murphy were really really similar in stats, but Drew won't even garner 10 votes.

On a completely different topic, who is the asshole who keeps 1-starring all of the threads I start?

Great article, although I didn't tear up. I have a lot of respect for Dale. The best argument for Dale Murphy in the HOF is that Jim Rice is in the HOF. Both were monsters for their teams for a number of years, but neither are HOF-caliber players.
