In fact, on the metric I posted, there are 125 batters listed above Murphy. Only 15 of those who are HOF-eligible are not in the HOF. Below Murph are 21 Hall of Famers.

I'm not saying he's a first-ballot guy, but he certainly belongs with them.

Bill James Hall of Fame monitor isn't so much as a measure of worthiness, but of metrics (including things such as MVPs, Gold Gloves, Allstars, etc) to predict who will make the Hall of Fame.

I've been talking about NL players. In the AL, Boggs, Brett, Puckett, Winfield, Murray, and Ripken are all there, as well.

For the record, I like Dale Murphy. He is a good human being. It is too bad that more players don't look up to him and not use PEDs or violate rules for advantage. He just isn't a Hall of Famer.

Quite a few think he was juicing. If you're going to vote for a player the you think may have been on PED's, he would not have been in the top 3 on the ballot this go around.

I'm kind of shocked by how positive the comments are in favor of his inclusion. And a lot of commenters roasting the author for his limited analysis of want constitutes Hall inclusion the same way Wuap roasted you.

It isn't about being a nice guy. Great players should be in the hall even if they are assholes. Good players shouldn't be in the hall even if they are great human beings like Murphy.

The qualitative factors are already being leveraged to keep otherwise deserving players out, why should they not be used to help get players who would otherwise be just below the bubble help get a bump in? It's a fair argument and they're clearly part of the stated selection criteria.

You know I am no Murphy leg humper like most LDS kids of the 80's and have been on the fence about his inclusion, but I have come around to the idea that I think he belongs. I keep hearing how yesterday's vote by the BWAA was a referendum on a class that was tainted by PEDs. But if they really wanted to send a message then they should have sent Murphy to the hall by himself if for no other reason than his I Won't Cheat Foundation.

I've noticed that aside from the stat geeks a lot of the Murphy detractors simply aren't old enough to appreciate what he meant to baseball during his career. Murphy's importance goes well beyond pure statistical analysis. It's exhausting to try and explain this to those who either A. are fixated on stats, or B. aren't old enough.

Well said. But I mostly want him in because he's a famous Mormon. That's important to tribalists like me.

You make a great point about his numbers not being a result of cheating. I understand why Murph doesn't get the votes needed, but would love to see him get in because his numbers are all him; no PEDs were involved. If he was a season's total of HRs short of 400 - 20-25+ - I'd argue that he shouldn't get in. But 398?

According to his numbers, he hit a HR every 20 at bats. He only played in about 25 games or so his last season when he was in Colorado. Had he played in half the games that year, he'd have 400 and would be a lock.

Now that his 15 year eligibility window is up, the BBWAA won't ever make the decision again. But I think the Veterans Committee will vote him in. And I won't be sad when that happens.
