  • Baseball strategy question...........

I am currently playing in a softball tournament we won our first 2 games last night and in our third game we played a team comprised of Binghams 5A state championship baseball team. These kids were very good, obviously fundamentally sound and hit the ball as hard as anyone we have played against. We hung with them though and had a 22-18 lead going in to the bottom of the last inning.

My question is this they score 2 runs, we are up 2, runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Everyone on this team can hit but the kid at the plate has been killing the ball. Do you walk the runner at the plate setting up the force at any base even though you are putting the winning run on base? Or do you play it straight up?

Just curious of everyones opinion in that situation, especially Ilpads.

How good was the kid hitting after him?

Make him chase a bad pitch and walk him if he doesn't. A young kid like that probably will swing.

Chase the bad pitch in men's city league softball?

Isn't it slow pitch? That is why the score is 22-18.

Right. You've never seen a pitcher throw a bad pitch on purpose in slow pitch or a hitter chase a bad pitch?

Yes, when the ball is being thrown at 80-100mph so it can fool the batter.

When a combined 40 runs are being scored, there isn't a lot of skillful pitching going on. Unless the goal is to keep the combined run total under 70. In that case, yeah maybe the guy should lob the ball at 3 mph instead of 4mph and watch the batter whiff.

I think what Jay Santos is saying is that you throw to the corners, or maybe high, in an attempt to get him to chase a pitch that might be called a strike only to pop it up. And you don't worry if it gets called a ball and he walks. This happens all the time in slow pitch softball. Granted there isn't as much strategy to pitching as in regular baseball, but a decent slow-pitcher can force some ground balls or pop outs.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I am not a fan of intentially putting the winning run on base. Pitch to him on the fringes, take your chances, unless he jacks it out, you are still tied.

What I mean is to throw a ball that would be difficult to hit, or at least hit hard. If he lets it go, he walks. If he swings, he still might hit it well but good chance he pops up or grounds out. Yes this does happen quite often. With a young kid up especially if he's got some ego, he's not gonna want to walk. But thanks for jumping in, DDD.

I depends on how close the fences are and how much power the kid has. I would never intentionally put the winning run on base unless I thought there was a pretty good chance the guy at the plate was going to jack one out and win the game himself.

I would pitch to him. Walking someone in softball is lame. Throw high and inside so he'll hopefully pop it up and work low and away if he pulls the ball trying to get a grounder.

I think its pretty obvious that junkie's team lost. I'd like to hear which course of action was taken. I'm betting they didn't walk the kid.
