Do we know the record for posts in a thread without a response by someone? I think that I must either be there, or have surpassed it.
I actually think that the Sharks and Blackhawks did well with their extensions. Getting 5 years of term for Bedard is great. Same with 5 years of term for Celebrini. Neither numbers are insane. Celebrini deserved 18.8, and I feel like Bedard could have pushed for more.
The really fascinating thing now is the Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar extensions. I am sure that both teams want 8-years of term. Makar and Hughes would be insane to give it to them, even if it is 20% of the cap for the entire term. Even if it is front loaded with bonuses. The cap is already at a negotiated amount instead of the percentage per the collective bargaining. It is going to keep going up. Both should walk to free agency. If they don't walk to free agency, both should sign at most a 3 year deal and then let the cap rise for their last 6 or 7 year deal at around 30 years of age.
Makar signing without walking makes more sense, because he has been with the team for a long time. Hughes doesn't. There are reports that he feels like he needs to give a deal to the Wild because they gave up so much to get him, but that was their choice and ultimately a risk they took. He should seriously walk and then take 20% of the cap and play for the Devils with his brothers like he wants.
