He was so critical to their success, Harbaugh calls him one of the best pass catches he's ever seen (although his drop rate since 2009 is 64th of 69 qualified receivers at 5.9%). The question is, what is he going to want with his new contract? My guess is to be paid like a top 5 receiver. Nobody is going to confuse him with Megatron. He's not as explosive as Dez Bryant. He's only had one season with more than 900 yards receiving, and he's been a little bit injury prone. But the 49ers have had horrible luck with other receivers (Mario Manningham? Randy Moss? Those were the good ones. AJ Jenkins? Jon Baldwin? Marlon Moore? Ricardo Lockette? Ugh) and like I said, the offense is clearly better when he plays than when he doesn't. What is he worth? Where does he rank in terms of priority free agents? Kaep has to be at the top, but after him? Aldon Smith is a difference maker, but Lemonier held his own yesterday when he was in there and Aldon was out. Crabs has to be #2 on the list, no?
They're going to be able to front load a contract next season for one of their big time players. I think it's going to be Crabtree. If not him, the only other guy it could be would be Kaepernick. Iupati will not be resigned if it means they can't resign Aldon Smith, Crabtree or Kaepernick, and I don't think they can resign those three if Iupati gets a big contract.

I don't think Aldon Smith gets a new contract this offseason. He's had some enormous off the field problems. He has one more year on his rookie deal and I don't think he would be cheap just because of said problems. If they really want to keep him in 2015, then they'll have to franchise him.

If indeed we're looking at a front-loaded contract next season for one of the big time players, then as I said before it has to be between Kaepernick and Crabtree. First off, Kaepernick is 3-1 in the postseason with two road playoff wins. Second, he more or less played well enough in the Super Bowl to win it. An idiotic set of downs near the goal line occurred after the Niners we're gaining yards in chunks at the end of the game. But on the other side Kaepernick has looked like a steaming turd at times this season. That was until Crabtree came back and now Kaepernick has looked more consistent. Given Crabtree's occasional injury issues, you give Crabtree the front loaded contract next season. If you absolutely have to part ways later due to injury in a few years, presumably the cap hit wouldn't be as terrible. While it is true that Flacco's price skyrocketed after the SB, that's more due to Flacco being regarded as average before last season. I don't think teams view Kaepernick in the same light. Unless he bombs against Carolina or the Seahawks, Kaepernick is going to be expensive to resign either after this season or next.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

    • Round three coming up.

Huge game by the defense. Twice Carolina had the ball on the 1 with three downs to score, and the D held them to 3. The 4th down stop Ahmad Brooks made was absolutely huge. The shift in momentum after that stop was big. Carolina managed 3 points the rest of the game and struggled moving the ball.

I know CMBF doesn't like Greg Roman, but it was very clear he was on his A-Game today and I think we will miss him next year. Carolina's D has been as stout as any, and he was able to keep them off balance all afternoon. While the game was "in doubt" San Fran scored on 5 of 7 drives, with one of the ones they didn't convert starting at their half yard line.

Next week is going to be an absolute battle. I'm going to be nervous all week. I like the way SF matches up with any of the remaining AFC teams. But the Seattle game sure makes me nervous.

Seattle will be tough, simply because of the way they play defense.

btw, I'm not really a Niners fan, but I am partial to them because of Steve Young.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

true, more to the point. I hate the way they play.

                Lol.

If they call head butts both ways this week, San Fran is going to have about 200 penalty yards.

Beautiful. Point out one missed head butt call from the game yesterday and compare it to the PI that has been going on in Seattle for the last three seasons.

And yes, most of the time Anquan Boldin needs to shut up. He's nearing Richard Sherman levels of annoying with all the jawing.

                  • I agree Sherman talks too much. But at least he produces.

AB can have one reception...and you would think he is being fit for a SB ring.

AB already has a superbowl ring. Sherman does not.

I hate all 4 teams left in the playoffs. I am praying for a natural disaster and a cancellation of the superbowl.

It's funny you should mention Super Bowl rings and Anquan Boldin. In fact he was fitted for a Super Bowl ring not that long ago, albeit with another team. Which means he has more Super Bowl rings than the entire Seahawks franchise since its inception in 1976. In fact, he earned that ring by getting close to 400 receiving yards and four TDs in the 2012 postseason and there's no way Baltimore wins it all without him.

In all seriousness, Boldin should have been called for a headbutt yesterday. It wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome of the game, just like the garbage rouging the passer call (was that Cam Newton out there?, because I could swear only Drew Brees gets those kinds of calls) didn't really affect the outcome.

The other call everyone is harping on is the 12 man in the huddle thing -- except the ref hadn't set the ball yet and the play clock hadn't started which means he couldn't call the penalty on that play.

                          • All Steak No Sizzle, unfortunately I think we're all going to be hating on Greg Roman after this upcoming game in Seattle. There's a chicken or the egg argument here, but the team FINALLY started running higher percentage short and intermediate passing plays like the rest of the league. Whether that has to do with Crabtree's return is the question and that probably has a lot to do with it. But the almost complete lack of production out of Kyle Williams, Jon Baldwin and Mario Manningham is what sticks out in my mind from the regular season -- either those guys totally suck (Williams absolutely does), or there's a problem in the passing game either because of scheme or because Kaepernick refused to trust these guys.

The fact of the matter now is that Vernon Davis, Crabtree and Anquan Boldin provide three really good receiving options, certainly an above average receiving corps in the NFL. Crabtree is rounding into 2012 shape in the postseason and that's good to see, though I don't think he's there quite yet.

This defense isn't quite as good as the 2011 defense, but it's a lot better than the 2012 postseason defense. This offense isn't quite as good as the 2012 postseason offense but it's a lot better than the 2011 offense. Too bad we can't combine the 2012 postseason offense with the 2011 defense.

No, I said that Anquan Boldin should have been called for a headbutt in the second half. The first half penalty was correctly called, but Boldin should have been called for it in the second half too.

EDIT-- my bad, it happened in the second quarter.

Still, 23-10 vs. 19-10, who cares.

Of course he doesn't. He is the biggest homer on this board.

Seahawks fans and 49er fans are the worst. Seahawks fans are all new, they remind me of Ute fans from 2004 and 2008. They all have brand new gear and none of them have any clue who Rick Mirer is.

49er fans (especially the ones in Utah) all jumped on the bandwagon in the late 80s early 90s when they were good and winning super bowls. Then they completely checked out for the past 15 years and now that they are winning again they remember again that they used to like the 49ers. They will spout off about Jerry Rice, Young, Montana, John Taylor, etc. But as soon as Mariucci left so did they. The last decade they haven't followed the team or said shit. They have no idea about Dennis Erickson, Mike Nolan, and Mike Singletary they checked out during that era. They all jumped back in during the 2011 season when Harbaugh came aboard and starting calling themselves life long fans because back in 1989 they remembered they had a 49er plush toy or blanket.
