  • Drew Brees has a bye, so I picked up Alex Smith. Good choice me.

    • Alex Smith misses too many critical throws. I think he'll be a solid backup some place else. I look for the Niners to be one of the leading teams looking to trade for Manning if the Colts are able to restructure his contract.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Yeah, I've rooted for Smith but he gets scared and misfires in key situations.

BTW, nice blatant uncalled PI/shove on Woodley.

To be fair, the Niners have had some injuries at wr. Josh Morgan is their best receiver and he's been out since week 4 or 5. But, the Niners are also pretty good at TE and Gore is a very good running back. I hope the Colts just release Manning so someone can grab him in free agency, but I see them restructuring that deal. I think the Niners and Ravens would be the two leading candidates for Manning. The Ravens have a better receiving corps, but the Niners are in an easier division.

            • Isn't Manning just a few years this side of 40? He's had a great career, but are there any teams other than Indy that would be willing to sign him at his age?

According to Steve Young on ESPN just now, those two misses in the red zone were more the fault of poorly-run routes by Alex's receivers than Alex's doing. Brother Young and his cohorts were pretty high on Alex's performance.

Yes, I am an Alex Smith homer.

He's.36. Yes some teams would absolutely be willing to sign him.

Kyle Williams didn't run a poor route in the end zone and Crabtree was exactly where he should have been up the sideline. But, Smith didn't turn over the ball and they handled a very good team tonight, so I shouldn't complain too much. I just fear that missing those throws in the red.zone is going to kill the Niners in the playoffs.

Out was certainly a bad route by Williams. If Smith leads him, Woodley picks off the pass.

                        • I was just happy that Alex didn't have any delays of game last night (that I can remember), and did a good job of getting rid of the ball quickly.

Aldon Smith is simply incredible, I love that guy. I especially love when he gets a sack and sprints off the field without celebrating. Niners defense and special teams are just incredible. Oh, and Andy Lee makes Tebow seem like an atheist.

Where are punters usually selected in the draft? 6th or 7th round if they're drafted at all? Andy Lee is worth at least a 4th round pick.

I may need to be more forgiving of Alex Smith, he's on his 7th offensive coordinator. One of the problems I've alluded to before is he doesn't get rid of the ball quickly enough, but he didn't get sacked last night.

I'm still pissed about that Cardinals game, the Niners didn't have any business losing that and now they have to travel to Seattle in order to clinch the #2 seed. The Saints are playing like the second best team in the league right now and the Niners aren't going to beat them at the Superdome. I actually like the Niners' chances better at Lambeau than at the Superdome. The conditions at Lambeau in January favor their style, a dome does not.

I, like a lot of people, were wondering "wtf?" when they picked Aldon Smith #7 overall. I hadn't heard anything about him leading up to the draft. But the kid is amazing and he may break Jevon Kearse's rookie record. He can bullrush tackles, stunt to the inside, he's ridiculous. He may actually give Von Miller a run for his money for Defensive Rookie of the Year. The thing is, the Niners didn't even have Patrick Willis last night who was in the running for Defensive POY. Between Aldon Smith, Justin Smith, Navarro Bowman, Patrick Willis and Carlos Rodgers, the Niners are loaded on defense.

                            • TO trying to get back with the Niners. Of course, TO would love to get back with any team.

I can't imagine the Niners taking this guy back. The need is great and I actually think TO would be an asset for a few games. But he burned a lot of bridges and there are team chemistry concerns (although TO typically behaves himself his first year).

                              • They are still standing despite being written off

Quarterbacks Tim Tebow of Denver and Alex Smith of San Francisco, and coaches Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants and Gary Kubiak of Houston have made it past rough patches and are in the thick of the NFL playoffs.
