Where do you think SF picks next year? Top 5?
I think SF ends up winning 5-6 games and picks top 10-12. At this point I am interested in seeing a bit more Troy Smith. I like his mobility. I think he is probably not any better than AS, though if he can be more consistent and not turn the ball over, I'm interested in seeing what he can bring. I think at worst he is a pretty decent backup.

On the flip side, yesterday was ugly until the end of the 3rd/4th quarter. That Denver team is not very good, and SF struggled to beat them. I'm thankful we play AZ and STL twice still with one more against Seattle at home. Amazingly enough they could still go to the playoffs. How sad is that.

I guess if you're a SF fan, Troy Smith didn't disappoint. Interesting what can happen to a team when they have a NFL caliber QB out there.

Troy Smith made some plays for sure and there were about 10 TDs called back because of holding. I think the Niners need to stick with him for the rest of the year so they can see what they have with him.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

        • 4th and 18!! I don't expect the niners to make the playoffs, but that was an enjoyable game to watch. Sure, it was frustrating seeing those touchdowns/interceptions being called back, but I prefer that frustration to 3 and outs every drive. Plus, winning helped.

I would have actually liked to see the game. Freaking Broncos/Cowboys.

As much as I want to hate Alex Smith, I can't throw all of the losing at his feet. He hasn't performed, but he is not the only one. I mean, he had SF in a position to beat Carolina before he got hurt and Carr blew it. The Niners should have beaten Atlanta in Atlanta had Clemens fallen down on his INT. Neither of those losses are Smiths fault, and the Niners are in a much better spot at 5-4 with those wins instead of the losses.

The most telling stat differential between Troy Smith through two games and with Alex Smith for the first 6 games of the season (or whenever Alex Smith got hurt) is this: Troy Smith yards per Attempt -- 11.7; Alex Smith yards per attempt -- 6.4. Even more than the passing efficiency differential, I think this shows that Troy Smith isn't afraid the throw the damn ball down the field while Alex Smith was consistently checking off to his running back. With Alex Smith, it was dink and dunk offense, akin to what we were seeing out of BYU between 2002-2004.

While it's true that Alex Smith didn't lose the games for the Niners against Carolina and Atlanta, he certainly didn't do the Niners any favors in those games. His passer efficiency rating was 65 against Atlanta and he threw two picks. Against Carolina, he completed less than 50% of this passes. Sure, the Niners could have won both of those games but for two things (Clements just falling down after the int and David Carr playing like David Carr), but those wins would have been in spite of Smith and not because of him. I've seen enough of Smith at this point to know that he's not a long term solution. He was awful against both the Chiefs and Seahawks and the Niners got blown out in both games.

Smith has been horrible. My post has nothing to do with Alex Smith the former ute, but more to do with the fact that this is a QB who has been given every opportunity a guy could ask for despite playing consisently brutal football and continues to prove he has no business starting in the league - if he should be in the league at all.

If not for the fact that he was #1 overall, he would have most likely been playing somewhere in the UFL long ago.

I don't expect many QBs to survive given the turmoil that has gone on under Smith's time in SF. He absolutely isn't blameless, but he has not been in a position to succeed (until this year, IMO).

His line has been terrible. He hasn't had playmakers. He hasn't had consistency with the offense. A QB isn't going to do it all on his own.

Having said that, Smith has not been great either. As a #2 QB, I think he'd be a great fit. But he is just not a starter in San Fran. I still think that in the right scenario, he would be able to succeed. He's like a Trent Dilfer. If you're hoping he can carry your team, you're screwed. If you have a system in place with a good enough defense, he can get the job done.

As far as SF is concerned, at this point, Monday is a turning point for the season. A win and they still are alive (long shot still) for the playoffs. A loss and I hope they lose every remaining game on their schedule. I can hope for a guy like Andrew Luck and Harbaugh to come in and save things. If they finish 6-10 (most likely, give or take a game) they will probably can Sing but I don't know that they will be picking low enough to get the QB that they need. I could see them taking a player like a Patrick Patterson of LSU or maybe looking to add another DL, but outside of that, they have a lot of talent invested in the team. Just frustrating to watch.

One other possibility that I could see happening is Vince Young coming to SF if he is indeed done in Tennessee.

It'll be interesting to see what QBs are out there on the FA market because there should be a ton. Young, Smith, Leinart...gotta be a few more.

                      • Smith has looked good today, as he has in stretches earlier.

I tend to feel bad for Smith - got forced to start on an absolute disaster of a team as a rookie and has been in a dysfunctional environment ever since.

I can't see him succeeding in the long term with the 49ers because the relationship with the city the fans and the organization is just to fraught - but I think if he got traded to the right environment he still has a chance to develop.

I tend to agree with most of this post (with the exception that I didn't get to see Smith play today, though his numbers would indicate that this was about his best game as a pro).

Big game Thursday now against the Chargers. Three wins and a chance to finish at 8-8. Games against Arizona and St. Louis certainly look to be winnable. If San Fran wins out, I think they take division thanks to owning tie breakers. Even if SF loses on Thursday to the Chargers there is an outside shot that they can make the playoffs if the cards fall right.

                          • Smith with a TD run early 7-7.

EDIT: Apparently not...I switched away and now it is back to 7-0. hmm...

Smith was a wuss and tucked instead of stretching out for the TD. Replay overturned it and a horrible play call prevented SF from scoring on the next play.

I've lost patience. That game last night was an abomination. Undisciplined football from a talented team. Not Superbowl talented, but certainly not losing record bad either. And definitely the most talented team in the division. Sing is gone, as he should be. Watching the game I know Smith isn't the (biggest) problem, but he isn't the solution either. He'll stick somewhere else after he leaves SF, because he's talented and smart, but he just doesn't seem to be a winner.

The play calling last night was awful. Way too many personal foul calls. You make a great play returning the opening kick of the second half back for a TD, but you do something stupid and grab a facemask on the return?!? And the defense, a supposed strength, got absolutely dominated. Clean house. Everybody out.

At this point, I hope SF loses its next two games so we have a shot at Mallet. Luck will be long gone by the time we pick. Either that or I hope that Cincy cuts ties with Carson Palmer. I'd even be interested in Vince Young. He may be a decent fit in San Fran as well.

                              • It was a frustrating game to watch. Making matters worse, I had to listen to the Charger announcers for the first half. Think Greg Wrubell on steroids, then multiply by two.

Anyway, I like Alex Smith and wish him success. I felt the same way about John Beck. Once a guy's gone from college, rivalries don't matter. I'll even wish Max Hall success if he will just shut up about his rant.
