  • The Official Pittsburgh Pirates Thread

This thread may turn into me soliloquoizing with myself but I figured, what the heck, this board needs a Pirates thread.

In any case, so far the young team is looking good in spring training. The bats are going and the pitching is coming up. Hopefully management won't trade away the stars for a handful of promising young talent. Last year I think it was 7 opening day starters were traded away by the end of the season.

Could this be the year to break the 17 year streak?

I'll be sure to revisit this thread after the Cubs bludgeon the Bucs again this year.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

My old man is a long-suffering Bucs fan, so I feel some tie to the Pirates. Our family even has a brick dedicated to Clemente at PNC Park (which is one of the great yards in baseball, btw).
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

No problem, we are used to it by now. I attend a couple games a year when they come to town and play the Astros. In all the games I've been to, I've only seen one other Pirates fan. I actually don't even cheer when they get a hit because it confuses people around me. I guess they don't expect a Pirates fan to be at the game.

In any case, if management is going to tank teh season, I hope they do it early just like last year. Waiting until the trade deadline to trade away our best pitcher and hitter just leads the fans on.

A friend sent this to me. This is a parody on a Happy 18th Birthday Pittsburgh Pirates Facebook wall. I thought it was funny and I'm sure the many people who frequent this thread will agree:

My pops is a Pirates fan and still believes Clemente is the greatest to ever play the game. Too bad they couldn't honor him more by winning.

Andy Van Slyke was my favorite player as a kid. I took a lot of crap from my best friend, a fellow Dodger fan who couldn't believe I hadn't chosen a Dodger as my favorite player (his favorite player was Orel Hershiser).

The Pirates are a fun team to watch. Love watching McCutchen and Alvarez play.

I have tons of his baseball cards if you ever decide to get nostalgic. He was one of those guys who made a few All-Star games and was a solid player, but his cards were as popular and Greg Gagne's....

I liked Van Slyke. The three-headed monster of Bonds, Bonilla and Van Slyke was great. My favorite Pirate player of all time was Johnny Ray. I have no idea why I liked him so much but it probably stems from him being a solid all around player on a semi-good team prior to Bonds and Bonilla being brought on.

I hate the Pirates and hope that each and every one of them get syphilis from their encounters with groupies.

I remember as a young Cardinals fan being bummed out when the Birds shipped out Van Slyke and "Spanky" Lavalliere for Tony Pena. Pena's one-leg-on-the-ground catching crouch was entertaining to watch for a little while, but he was mostly washed up by the time he got to STL. Van Slyke went on to murder the Cards for years. The Pirates used to piss me off--guys like Chico Lind and Tony Womack who sucked, yet always came up big against STL. Now they're not so bad...I'd like to figuratively pat the Pittsburgh organization on the head.

Womack burned you in '01 (when on the Dbacks), too, didn't he?

How could you not love Pena? He played in Boston in 89-91 (or somewhere close to that), and literally half of our little league catchers put their right foot out when they caught.

I'm going to have to bust out my baseball cards after reading all these names I haven't thought of for years...

Yes, Womack had a long history of hurting the Cards. So much so that they went out and acquired him after his stint in Arizona, and he proceeded to suck so badly that he made Geronimo Pena look like an all-star. Aside from a couple decent years from Fernando Vina, the Cards have had a black hole at 2B since the days of Tommy Herr.
