  • 2014 Spring Classics

Anyone follow the Spring Classics? Outside of the Tour, this is probably my favorite time of year for international races. Even though Paris-Nice is technically considered a spring classic (I don't know, maybe it isn't), the one day races are where the real excitement comes for me.

This Sunday is Milan - San Remo. Unfortunately, they had some severe weather recently that caused a bunch of road damage so they've decided to eliminate the Pompeiana climb, which has tended to keep MSR from being a pure sprinter's race. (But I guess there's always the Poggio to inflict some last minute damage.) Looks like Valvarde just dropped out earlier today for this reason. Also I'm just seeing the Tom Boonen pulled out a couple of days ago due to his girl friend having a miscarriage.

As far as TV coverage here in the states, it doesn't look like we have to wait until Paris-Roubaix to watch anything on tv. There's always cyclingfans, but it has tended to be hit or miss for me in the past.

    A good read before Sunday's race: http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/page/l...2#.UyoVb_ldXzg

    My prediction: Andre Greipel
But I'll be cheering for Fabian.
I told him he was a goddamn Nazi Stormtrooper.

Taylor Phinney not starting MSR. Probably the only shot for an American on the podium.

Too bad. He has such promise but its fulfillment always seems to be just beyond his grasp

Thanks for posting that. Those guys looked absolutely gassed at the end of that race.

Perhaps team Katusha is using xenon gas also.

Nothing like 7 hours in the rain to suck it out of you. Cancellara is complaining that the race wasn't hard enough for him to really take advantage. I can't believe that he was able to pull a second place in a group of sprinters. Maybe that's even more impressive to me than him taking a 50k flier.

I thought this was a pretty funny quote from one of the MSR articles I came across:

The weather did its best to inject some drama though, and I got a good chuckle out of seeing the world’s best riders look like weekend club riders, all tucked up tight in their cold weather gear. Cycling’s unsexy enough at the best of times, it fails miserably as a fashion statement in the cold. And don’t even get me started (again) on those helmets.

Here's the final 25k to yesterday's E3 Harelbeke. E3 is always the first of the Spring Classics with cobble stones, so it serves as a nice precursor for Roubaix. Nothing too exciting. After getting off the front with four, and despite getting one and two'd (mostly just one'd) by Pharma-Quickstep, predictably, Peter Sagan took the sprint easily. Fabian Cancellara looked strong. He got caught up behind a crash with about 40km to go and required a wheel change. He was able to pull the gap down to 12, but couldn't ever close it. Farrar rode the Cancellara express to the end and placed top 10, which is always note worthy in these spring classics.

Next up: Gent-Wevelgem tomorrow. And then Tour of Flanders next Sunday!

Tomorrow is the Tour of Flanders aka the Ronde. The second biggest race of the Spring Classics. This is the big ramp up before Paris-Roubaix and everybody wants this win. Should be fantastic. Too many front runners to pick from.
