You're moving along at a fine clip there, certainly at a CUF-worthy level, although that comes as no surprise.

BTW, you want hills? Here's a ride I'm thinking about doing Saturday while Mrs. PAC does her century. The steep middle part is the infamous Sierra Road climb which will be the finish of the Tour of California Stage 4. I may wuss out and go up the back side. Either way, the forecast is for pain.

Wow. Mile 29 to 33.5 or so is a serious climb.

The more I look at it (3.4 miles with a steady 9.5% incline) the more I think I'm backing out and heading up the backside. The main reason I want to do it is to gain a better appreciation for the tour riders. Imagine going up that thing after you've already done 90 miles and a lot of climbing (Mines Road and Mt. Hamilton are earlier in their route, and both are tough slogs), and then facing The Wall (as it's known) for the big finish. If I do it, I'll be going 5 mph or less. I'm guessing the pros will be 10-11 mph (anyone? can they go even fast than that?); that's hard for me to fathom.

Out for a ride tonight, hoping to put in 20 miles. At about mile 9, I hear an angry hiss coming from behind me. I know what that is.

No big deal. I have a patch kit and a CO2 pump/multitool. And I've been patching bike tubes since I was 7. I also have a cell phone just in case.

So I pull to the side of the road...and promptly forget to take my foot out of the pedal. Oops. Over I go into a patch of burrs and weeds.

Lola (that's her name) was fine. Slightly turned the seat off of center, but I fixed that. Otherwise, no issues at all. I had some minor scratches. So no big deal. Fixed the flat and went on. But it's still going to take me a while until clipless pedals become second nature.
