This is one of those times that I am grateful the only bike I ride is in front of a television. Hope you have a speedy recovery man. I have so many people to pray for lately. Stay healthy everyone!

One of my riding buddies went down this weekend. He was riding his fixie and got his front wheel caught on the edge of the pavement, sending him into a ditch alongside the road. Somehow he went over the handlebars, landing directly on his left shoulder. Surgery was yesterday to fix his fractured clavicle.

It took me 2 full days to get up the courage to tell my wife what happened to him. Like RCV, he is a very experienced cyclist who hasn't gone down hard like this in 20 years or so. But this one was a good one.

Wow, RC, I didn't see this thread (I was gone for a few days) until now, although I had been wondering about your leg after reading the other thread yesterday. Hope the recovery goes well, but given your fitness level, I'm sure it will.

But this adds to my conviction that pack riding just isn't for me. I like looking around at the countryside, and don't have enough confidence in my reflexes to ride within a foot or two of another cyclist. I'm content to give up the benefits of drafting in favor of a 5-10 foot cushion. I'm a wuss.

I think that I'm getting there as well, PAC. I've seen too many bad wrecks in the last several years to realize that the extra couple of MPH perhaps are just not worth the risk.

Son of a!!! Sorry to hear about your injury. But if it were me, I would be finding out if they can make me any better looking. Silver linings and all. Once you are out of the hospital, will they give you one of those Rip Hamilton masks to wear when you ride? That would be bad ass. Seriously.

Yikes! Don't tell these stories until my addiction to cycling is fully developed.

Here's to a quick full recovery.

Wow, that's a nasty fall RC. I'm sure that doesn't deter your future riding, but thanks for sharing. It's stories like this that keep me focused while riding and reminds me to never become lax in my awareness of the surroundings.

Awefully noble of you to prevent damage to your bike with your noggin'!

                Wishing you a quick recovery.

I went back to the doctor today. The fluid in my thigh is just blood draining down from my hip area. The doctor send it is just pooling down there and it will go away. It looks and feels like I'm carrying an IV bag in my thigh. My nose does not need to be reset, my scabs will slowly disappear and I will ride again. He did a blood test, a urine test and told me as I was walking out the door that I was in better shape then 90% of the thirty year old guys that he looks at. That was all I needed and any thought of slowing down is now being flushed away. I got my bike back today and I'll be ready to go tomorrow. I'm a happy cyclist today.

Great news, you freak of nature. I've told several others of your exploits (including Lotoja) and when they ask if my friend is a young guy I assure them you're much, much younger than I.

I can't remember anything about it so this is all second hand. We were going about twenty two mph and I crossed wheels with my neighbor who I ride with all the time. He is a pharmacist so he was a big help later own. I don't remember hitting the ground but I guess I was out for right around five minutes. They called the ambluance but they tell me when it got out there I resusfed to get in it. Dave, my neighbor, also called his wife to come get my bike. I got in with them but they tell me I didn't want to go to hospital but they took me anyway. I still can't remember any of this. After getting to the hospital they wanted to do a scan on my brain. I remeber freaking out becaus they had me in a neck brace and I'm terrilbly Clautrophic so I didn't want to go into that scan. I guess they gave me something and my brother held me down and they got it done. They held me overnight and tried loading me up with perkadan. The doctor came in today and told me I had a broken cheek bone, eye socket and nose. The nose is only thing they may have to reset. I m home now but sore. My left side is sore and my right hand is to. This cut one of my jerseys off of me so I'm a little bummed about that but my shorts are okay and very little damage to my bike. This was my first time going down in over twenty years so for all you guys just getting into biking I hope you keep going. Cycling has given me so much joy to let a little thing like this stop me. I hope this makes sense because I'm still a little groggy.
12 years and I've never gone down. Sorry about that.

I was almost run down today by a dick in a convertible today ripping down Sundance. I was going 45 mph and the guy must have been doing 65...
