The horrible PR decisions just keep coming. The way this has gone for Dr. Hill, he should have been smart enough to hold that press availability today, on a Friday, so it loses traction over the weekend, and everyone starts to move on next week. Instead, he's going to double down on his player safety excuse Monday with a room full of media wanting to know if he really told Jim Boylen he didn't want the series to continue and why Larry didn't talk to Dave about his problems with the game, etc, etc, fueling another full week of media and message board chatter.

2 things. Jim Boylen is a piece of shit lying snake oil salesman. It would be easy to say, yes Jim Boylen lied. That is what Jim Boylen does.

Second Krystkowiak by Rose admission called him and tried to talk to him. Yes he left a message saying he was cancelling the series, but Rose seemed to blow it off not calling back for weeks. It is inaccurate to say the Krystkowiak didn't talk to Rose. He tried to.

With those being said, I still think that Krystkowiak and Hill handled this incredibly poorly, unlike you I can admit a mistake from someone attached to the team I cheer for.

Rose's contention is that he met and talked to Larry frequently and never had Larry mentioned that he thought player safety was a problem (like even after the Mika incident). Or in the line after the Emery incident when Dave apologized, and Larry told him, Don't worry about it.

But all of that is beside my point. Hill should have addressed the media this week rather than extending the media scrutiny and fan discussion into another week.

That's the main thing I thought when I heard about it as well. The timing seems odd. It extends the life of the thing.

                • Maybe he's hoping news about the news conference loses traction over the weekend and nobody shows up.

                  • Koward is such an inveterate garbage dump.

Here is a link to an article from 1989 about Koward breaking another player's nose and sending him to the hospital.

So Koward started a clearing brawl in college, then in the NBA he broke another's nose, and couple that with the video of him having to be restrained by players and coaches from getting physical with a freshman, Nick Emery? It appears the players will need to be protected from Koward.

If Boylen is, as you say, a lying snake oil salesman, then that fits a pattern for your sorry athletic department. Your coach and ad "handled this incredibly poorly" because they are lying hypocrites.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Funk, this isn't an accurate or fair representation. K called to inform Rose he was cancelling the series. It wasn't to talk things over. He left a voice message. Rose sat on it hoping a little time would cool things down. Then he called back to see if there was any way they could work it out and was told "absolutely not". Rose also said that he apologized to K after the game and was told everything was fine. You really should listen to a transcript of the radio interview with Rose the other day.

                        • The whole thing is a PR move by Hill trying to capitalize on the "BYU plays dirty" news story the Utes have been building. He moved too soon and it has backfired. The presses is to announce that the game will be played. Spence wants it played, it will be played.

Can't wait to see Hill and Koward meet the media on Monday.

Maybe Krystkowiak and Hill are right. Maybe we should cancel all sports or at least “put them on hold;” emotions are way too escalated cross the board. We’ll start with hockey. That should’ve happened 50 years ago. Let’s cancel tennis, too — Serena Williams gave a mean look to one of her opponents. Or was it to one of the ballboys? Based on all the theatrics in soccer — players throwing themselves on the ground, writhing in agony — that sport needs a cooling-off period. Don’t even get us started on football — did you see that Odell Beckham-Josh Norman dustup?

Contact your congressman. Tell him to put sports on hold.

Meanwhile, back on earth … Has there even been a sillier, more cowardly move by an athletic department in recent memory than what the Utes just did? The wonder is that they could make such an announcement without a shred of embarrassment. They threw a tantrum, took their ball home and refused to play with the kids down the street anymore, supposedly because BYU’s Nick Emery threw a sucker punch.
Using The Punch for his own purposes was disingenuous. Something more is going on here; otherwise, as BYU coach Dave Rose said, “This doesn’t make any sense at all.” Just six years ago Utah’s Marshall Henderson punched Jackson Emery — Nick’s brother — in the face, and BYU didn’t cancel the series. No coach or athlete with any self-respect walks away from a fight or a challenge. Not only are Hill and Krystkowiak walking from it, they are willing to pay $80,000 to buy it out.
Also provides a list of the many cases when K got in fights as a player.

                              • K was out of control with Emery at the end of the game. Maybe he's got anger issues he's been trying to work on, and knows that he can't handle coaching against BYU. Maybe the way he reacted at the end of the game freaked him out, and this is all for him.
