Just stop. That's a strawman and you know it.Originally posted by Topper View PostThe Church doesn't want to invest in college sports at most of its universities but does want to invest in upscale apartment complexes and shopping malls?"Either evolution or intelligent design can account for the athlete, but neither can account for the sports fan." - Robert Brault

How so? The Church invests in investment properties and in matters that promotes its purposes. One of the activities the membership enjoyed for many decades were the collegiate sports at Ricks and for those in Hawaii at Laie. Collegiate sports bind people to the culture unlike anything else.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostJust stop. That's a strawman and you know it.
I don't fault for investing in properties as many of those managers know a thing or two about ROI. But there can be too much penny pinching. It is sad to see collegiate sports be disbanded at the two other BYUs. Again, it seems as if management simply does not care what the general membership feels. RC can reflect how many in Idaho felt let down by the decision to disband Ricks sports."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

If they cut sports at BYU, the only tie-in I would have would be relatives attending from time to time. But my passion to see it succeed would diminish. The few pennies I donate would be less.Originally posted by RC Vikings View PostSports at BYU won't be cut until Eyring is in charge."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Money is the controlling element. I am shocked, just shocked. I can actually understand why, but depending on the day when I here the mantra about how "we are different" I either grit my teeth or fall on the ground and start laughing.Originally posted by Topper View PostHow so? That being said, there are certain issues they wouldn't compromise over no matter how much money was thrown their way. No amount of money offered by the Big 12 or PAC 12 would get them to play on Sunday or give women the Priesthood to heal their own injured players.

If the Church is a restorationist church, you could go back to the early days of Christianity when the Christians were not fastidious in Sabbath day observance. So the Church could state that no activities on Sunday were simply an artifact of the Medieval Church, so allowing certain activities to occur on Sunday is a restoration of all things.Originally posted by byu71 View PostMoney is the controlling element. BYU is the flagship representitive to the world for how "mormons" should behave. Sunday play will never, ever be allowed.Originally posted by Topper View PostIf the Church is a restorationist church, you could go back to the early days of Christianity when the Christians were not fastidious in Sabbath day observance. I would bet on women in the Priesthood and gay marriage before Sunday play would be allowed.

I'm thinking BYU-H spends a fair amount of money on travel and lodging and not much publicity comes from sports for BYU-H. SVU on the other hand is pushing hard for D3 sports and can serve the needs of the LDS athlete who can't play D1 sports.

I just took a quick glance through the rosters on the BYU-H athetics site. There are maybe a dozen Polynesian athletes across all teams. It looks like a lot of Utah and California kids looking for a reason to be in Hawaii.Originally posted by Topper View PostPolynesians deserve the chance to compete even if they are not division 1.

That is the fault of coaches. The school is supposed to prefer Pacific Islanders.Originally posted by wapiti View PostI just took a quick glance through the rosters on the BYU-H athetics site. Maybe announcement that the Y of I ship will sail again. Ricks Old conference is losing people. North Idaho too far for juco so will play in Washington. Tough Wrestling program. So 5 teams in that conference, Southern Idaho, Eastern Utah, Snow, Salt Lake Community, and the hapless Colorado northwestern. Maybe a Nevada Juco will come. But Utah Valley, Dixie, old Conference foes now four year colleges. Team for Ricks to go to. I never really followed Seasider athletics. Heard of Ricks and growing up would play CSI, but I did not follow the Vikings that much. Knew they had powerhouse football teams. One that never missed home football or basketball game when I was in town.
When Ricks became Y of I, read where someone asked why BYUH whose travel budget was more kept there sports. Change of emphasis. Airport not in Rexburg, IF has airport close by and there is no major airport in Provo. Don't know about community support at BYUH, but will make some people not happy. Bring on intercollegiate athletics as BYUI. I mean who goes to the competitive games, and is a juco a step ahead of the Madison Bobcats, Sugar Salem Diggers, or the Fremont teams. Redskins a bit far to travel. A few IF people trekked to Rexburg I think.
