How much eligibility does Fischer have? I'm not sure he's going to contribute much at BYU with Carlino, Haws, KC, Bartley, Nick Emery, TJ Haws in the system.

Looks like he has 2 years and will have plenty of opportunity to contribute at BYU. After his RS, Haws and Carlino are seniors. Little Haws is going straight on a mission. Emery will be a true freshman 2 years from now. Hopefully he can be a solid bench contirbutor next year and that or even a starter as a senior. And hopefully nobody gets injured.Originally posted by jay santos View PostHow much eligibility does Fischer have? We need a JC big next year in the worst way. How that's going to happen without an available scholarship is anyone's guess."Either evolution or intelligent design can account for the athlete, but neither can account for the sports fan." - Robert Brault

Entire year. It will be interesting to see if there is any movement on the roster for next year.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostCan Fischer play after the semester ends or is he RS'ing the entire season?
I would think that at least one out of Winder, Halford and Sharp is not on scholarship next year. The current post situation for next year is bleak, I mean really bleak. Right now BYU's bigs will consist of Austin, Sharp, Worthington, Isaac Nelson and Ryan Andrus. That is not a good situation to be in. I don't know what Rose can do about it but my guess is he will try as hard as he did last year. In addition to our sterling fearsome 5some at both post positions, BYU has 8 perimeter players scheduled to be on scholarship. That 8 includes all of our current playing perimeter players of Haws, Carlino, Collinsworth, Bartley, Winder, Halford and then Fischer and Jordan Chatman. I would think that Halford and Winder are both expendable to some extent. If Fischer can be that instant offensive spark off the bench, what more good is Halford? With the fact that Frank Bartley is more athletic than and a better basketball player than Anson, what does Anson provide? I would think that politically Rose would likely deal with running off Halford (white mormon kid from Utah County as any in that camp offended by Rose for moving Halford along are likely to forgive him sooner rather than later) over Anson but on the other hand with his redshirt year Winder has been on scholarship for 4 years. It will be intersting to see how it develops but I just can't fathom Rose going into next year with the post situation as presently planned.
Sharp clearly has to be concerned but I struggle to see Rose talking Sharp into leaving Utah to come to BYU only to have his scholarship pulled before his senior year. If Rose has to offend a subclass of the white Utah County mormon variety, I think he wants the offense to not contaminate Lone Peak High in way or form. So my early season prediction is Halford moves along, or perhaps Worthington is suddenly converted to mission service although I think he has more potential than many here. In my world this is what happens: Halford moves along, Ryan Andrus goes straight on a mission instead of playing next year. Payton Dastrup plays a year before his mission and BYU goes and gets one JC Big. The roster would then be thus:
Haws - SR
Carlino - Sr
Collinsworth - JR
Bartley - SO
Fischer - JR
Winder - SR
Chatman - FR (really makes sense to consider redshirting him)
Austin - SR
Sharp - SR
JC Big - JR
Worthington - SO
Nelson - FR
Dastrup - FRDo Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

Keena Young played big but was not a true big man.
Vuk Ivanovic? Ambrosino? Josh Burgess? Fernando Malaman? Logan Magnusson? Archie Rose?
We would have better luck finding a midyear transfer.*Banned*

I almost hope Dastrup doesn't play and we suffer through next year as I like how the team fills out 2-3 years from now. If he doesn't and one of those players is asked to fall on the grenade, can Pope find a stop-gap JC 4-5 to fit in this system is the real question."Either evolution or intelligent design can account for the athlete, but neither can account for the sports fan." - Robert Brault

I think Dastrup can play a year and then return to play as a sophomore with a JR Mika and then as a seasoned RM JR with a really seasoned RM SR in Mika. I think if BYU can get a decent JC transfer or a SR who has already graduated or perhaps a mid-season transfer, anyone know of someone looking to bolt from a big time program in December? But I think Payton could help more next year in helping BYU getting a win or two in the NCAA tourney than he would be able to do as a true freshman post mission.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostI almost hope Dastrup doesn't play and we suffer through next year as I like how the team fills out 2-3 years from now. I don't mean to turn the page just yet but I'm not sold that with them as the Big-3 this team is anything but an early exit (and yes, I realize that this is exactly what BYU is as a program but I'm holding out hope that the Lone Peak tribe will be the ones to get us over the Sweet-16-hump).Originally posted by jay santos View PostHaws Carlino senior year and KC as a junior? Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Will Nelson be able to contribute or is he likely to be a project. My memory of his highlight reel showed him to be very, very thin, somewhat quick, but unknown in terms of competing against top flight talent. He's from Mission Viejo IIRC.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostI am curious where we find a JC big. Other than Rafa what success have we had?
