    • I really like Carlino and still think he has a big upside. I still hold out hope he can get his head right and have a big senior year.

      • Coach did the right thing with Matty but I would like to see him reinserted in the starting lineup come WCC tournament time. I won't second guess him if he doesn't though.

My last hyperbole of the night: Dobey is the weakest player in women's college basketball. the ball leaves his hand on a pass or a shot and I'm just sure it will never arrive at its intended destination. His passing is scary bad and he needs to try decaf and stop wasting so much energy bouncing and instead move laterally. The second half defense was abysmal.

Mika didn't have a good game but damn you've got to give him a few more touches.

        • Being "not that good of a team" is a bummer. Being "not that good of a team" in the WCC is depressing.*

This team is giving up an average of 79 points a game. Unbelievable. Where is the fix for next season going to come from?

*And no I don't wish BYU would have stayed in the MWC.

I totally rage quit that game last night.

I am rarely critical of Rose, but he needs to fix this defense. It's terrible. Our talent is too good to be this poor on that end of the floor. That's on him.

One of the physicians I work with is convinced that Rose's cancer and treatment are responsible for the current state of the basketball team. I'm not sure if that is a fair assessment or not. Regardless, I wonder if we see a shake-up with the assistant coaching staff this off season.

                • Rose has never been defensively minded. Cancer has nothing to do with it. Look at his college DNA. Phi Slamma Jamma wasn't a lockdown team, either. Much like Bronco is not an offensively minded coach, Rose is not a defensively minded coach. His single best season was a contrast in terms, though. Jimmer embodied everything Rose likes about offense.....wide open, shoot the ball, faster tempo. However, Rose lucked out in that he also had one of the better defensive players in BYU history....at least as it pertained to steals.

Rose will never be a defensive coach. But he needs to be smart enough to bring in someone that is.

I think our defense has always been adequate under Rose. No we don't usually have lock down defenders but we play great team defense and are usually one of the better teams at creating turnovers as a result. I don't have the turnover stats to back it up but that seems to have really been lacking these last two season. I'm actually amazed that we are still in the top 5 in scoring without creating turnovers and running as much as we normally do.

Our defense is simply bad, worse than it should be for our talent level.

Elevation and fatigue are usually our best defense although some units yes have been better than others. As was mentioned, having a generational player on offense and steal machine on defense in the same backcourt went along way towards making BYU appear to be a great defensive team.

Rose was responsible for the defense when Cleveland was the HC and it was pretty good then. It also usually came through when needed during the first 6-7 years of the Rose tenure when it was needed except when BYU was playing teams with much better athletes. The past 3 years it has gotten worse year by year. This year should have reversed that trend with the players on the team. I put it on him and his coaching staff, but I am not so quick to dismiss that potentially he isn't the same and that his cancer might have had an impact. Regardless, it would be nice if he found a solution that improved the situation.

Additionally, BYU cannot have Winder, Sharp, Austin and Halford eat up 4 scholarships, out of 12 eligible players to play which is roughly 33%, averaging 2.75 years in the program and provide BYU a collective average of 19 ppg. That is 1/3 of your total scholarship players and 4 of your most experienced upperclass players only giving you about 25% of what you allow your opponent to score. That puts a lot of pressure on the others to make up the remaining deficit and leaves little room for error when Tyler and Mika don't perform well. Too many role players IMO. I think Halford could be a decent guy off the bench as he is scoring 8.6 ppg, his game yesterday nothwithstanding. But other than that I can't see the benefit of having both Sharp and Austin and both Winder and Bartley on scholarship. Time will tell what Rose does but my totally unqualified opinion is he made some mistakes in scholarship allocation, missed some crucial recruits (I wonder how different this team would have been had Aytes been here all along) and honestly I don't think he is coaching this gang as well as he coached previous gangs.

It is even worse as it is 10 scholarship players are eligible to play so of the 4 juniors I mentioned that is 40% of the scholarship players leaving the other 6 scholarship players to account for 80% of your teams points. Included in that is 3 freshman, only one of which is ready to contribute. Then when your role players are not real good at defense, it is a problem.

                          • BYU has some problems but most of them pertain to how a game is called on any given night. When a ref allows bumping off the ball and hand-checks within 10 ft, we can defend just fine. When we are prevented from doing those things by the way a game is called, we either have our team in serious foul trouble or we let the other team score at will. The solution to this is good help defense but when we help well, we don't have the athletic length to contest at the perimeter. This team is really hurt defensively by the new rules.

Offensively we are better than last year but still demonstrating the same problem. We have a limited number of 3 point threats and almost no multi-dimensional players offensively. For example, Haws can cut and shoot mid-range but he is not a deep bomber yet and he can't beat a guy off the dribble often. KC can beat you off the dribble but can't finish at the charity stripe and can't shoot from deep. Mika has some legit post moves and skills but cannot face up and is still a freshman in his confidence and decision making. Nate has no post move and can't shoot from 3 so he is often unguarded on offense allowing another player to clog the paint or drift onto Haws (most popular D we've seen since December).

The truth is, we have talent and skill gaps. This team has never come together from a skill-set perspective to have the whole be better than the parts. Rose has done yeoman's work trying to make it so but there are too many problems. Like most of you, I'm frustrated by the defense but again, I don't blame Rose. We just have a real defensive problem. The only legit defender who starts is Collinsworth. The Lone Peak boys are all clueless defensively and Halford is an absolute train-wreck. Off the bench it doesn't get better. Bartley should be a great defender with his strength and speed but he isn't. Winder can play defense but chooses not to. Carlino plays with surprising length and energy but comes off the bench because he can't control himself offensively. Sharp weighs about 150 lbs. and is trying to guard in the pivot with the new rules so he fouls everyone.

All of that aside, BYU could still go on a run and beat SMC and Gonzaga. They could still make the tournament and even do some damage there. They have very good wins this year but they are inconsistent and don't have all of the pieces.

                            • KD, what do you think a stretch 4 could do for this team. For example, add Noah Hartsock as a junior to this team.

I guess I'm just tired of watching Nate with the ball at 17 feet with no one within 8 feet of him… and he doesn't even look at the rim. No shot fake, no dribble, certainly no attempt to do anything other than dump the ball off to the wings.

                              Don't get me wrong, I think Nate would be a decent backup 5. I just don't think he's a great 4.

Nate takes that shot last year and makes it.
