I don't get the Carlino rumors the past couple of years. The kid has been given every opportunity at BYU to blossom into a star and he plays like a star 40% of the time. However, he plays very poorly 25% of the time and then decent 35% of the time. His best position is point guard with the ball in his hands but his inconsistency and the fact that when he is down, the whole team is dragged down more than it is with any other player necessitates him coming off the bench. When he is on in this role BYU can exploit it and when he is off there are other options. I doubt he would get a better opportunity elsewhere.
Now if Matt dislikes BYU because he is not LDS and BYU is weird and he just wants to move on with his life while playing another year of ball since he is not going to be a bigtime baller, that is a different case. But from a playing perspective he is in as good a situation as he can be in given his limitations as a player, IMO. Further, when considering that there is some degree of probability that there will be no other option next year but Matt if Kyle doesn't return, Matt may get to keep going even when he is off as much next year as he did his sophomore year.
