The 2012-2013 Running Utes of Utah

Just so you are aware, I expect this thread to be one of the most active in the history of CUF.

I am aware that Utah still has nine contests remaining in the current season, but I don't know how much more time I can spend thinking about Javon Dawson's game before I end up in the corner curled into the fetal position, sucking my thumb and humming Tijuana Taxi. The current season, the longest in the history of organized sports at any level, will some day come to an end. I also believe that a loving, merciful God will help us all to forget it, at some point.

So, anyways, next year. The slate is as blank as Ray Giacoletti's stare. There's so much coming and going, who the crap knows what will happen? The coaches are still out recruiting, too, so there could be even more variables to be included in our equation of, uh, stuff.

Anyway, here's where we are right now, I think. Depth chart:

    G: Dean, Storey
    G: Dotson, Hines, Seymour, AO
    F: Leslie, Hearlihy
    F: Loveridge, Washburn, Olsen
    C: Foster, Bachynski

Guys most likely to redshirt, in order of likelihood:

    AO
    Hearlihy
    Seymour

However, if Seymour can shoot like the recruiting goobers say he can, I think he's got a shot of playing. Same with Hearlihy, if he guard the 3 and shoot. Utah is desperate for shooters like Nick Nolte is desperate for Proactiv. AO needs a year, but he's a thing that is wick, he just needs time.

Guys most likely to be mercifully set free, in order of likelihood:

    Dawson
    Matthews
    Martin
    Farr
    Washburn
    AO
    Hines

Of Martin, Dawson, Matthews, I think Martin is the most likely to hang around, because Utah is desperate for shooters like Kelly Clarkson is desperate for a salad. Matthews just doesn't get it, and I don't think K has the patience to wait until he gets it. If Matthews stays, he redshirts and spends the year with an assistant's foot in his hind parts, but I wouldn't bet on it. Disappointing.

Hines sticks around because he can shoot (at least for a Runnin' Ute), and Lisa Leslie sticks around because she's a great blender who would be a lot better on a team where some of his teammates can, I don't know, score.

Strange as it is, I wouldn't be totally shocked to see Washburn gone and Bachynski take the role of the loud clapping, inconsistent, pasty yet endearing lanky guy. That's crazy, isn't it, but it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. Don't you sort of know what Wash is "good" for at this point? And he's got one year left. Bachynski has three, and I can't assume his ceiling could possibly be lower than Wash's. Utah will have Foster, Olsen, Bachynski, and Wash. How many 7' stiffs does one team need? And if it comes down to Foster for one year or Washburn for one year, DUH. If it's Washburn for one year or Matthews for three years, who cares? Washburn for one or unnamed JC Big Wing for two?

I'm not sure if Love is a 3 or a 4, but, based on talent alone, I expect him to get a ton of minutes. Evidently he can shoot it, he's got a big body, but he's not tall. I doubt he'll be effective in the post early on, but I think he'll learn to score pretty quickly. If there really is a merciful God who loves us, he will learn to score quickly.

Dean shot 42% from 3 at EWU. If he can match that at Utah, it would be massive. It would also greatly compliment Dotson, who can't shoot but can get to the rim. Storey will come off the bench, and I really like him as an energy guy who can push the tempo and pressure the ball.

The thing that pisses me off is George Matthews. If Love is a 4, then there's a big fat hole at the 3. George Matthews should be filling that hole like Goatnapper filling a cup at the fertility clinic, or something. But he just doesn't get it. Can Dotson play the 3? Not sure he's big enough. Lisa Leslie can play the 3, but that would be better for 15 minutes per night instead of 30. Hearlihy is a 3, but I just doubt he's ready to play next year. Maybe it's because he looks like a bona fide albino. We've had a ton of surprising disappointments over the past few years, so it seems like we're due for a surprising appointment. Maybe Hearlihy is that guy. But he's so white he's translucent.

Finally, I am looking forward to the day where it doesn't seem totally embarrassing to spend this much time thinking about Utah basketball. As it is, however, there's no controlling the tears of embarrassment welling up in both of my eyes.

    There's a grief that can't be spoken.

Well, this thread hasn't quite exploded in participation like I thought it would, but I'm certain the time will come.

Until that day, I'd like to add a few thoughts to the lengthy tome I wrote above:

I think it is safe to say that the reason this thread has seen little action is that we may be the only 2 who have watched more than 1 game at the Hunty this season. Now, we may be watching those games with tears in our eyes, but at least we are watching.

It is hard to argue with your thoughts here. I love Dawson and I hate that I love Dawson because he should not be on the court. In high school, he is the lineman that the coach kept on the hoop team. No talent but he bustles around, throws his weight around and can't shoot. You know what is worse? CSU offered him a scholarship. How bad is that? At least Utah waited till the last second when they were completely desperate and the Utes were just trying to fill out a team. CSU had him in their plans for a while.

I like Cedric Martin. He is probably the best Ute defender (yeah, that means almost as much as him being the best Ute shooter on the team). I would love it if he could somehow play some small forward next year. With Dotson being the slasher, he might make a nice compliment to Dean from the outside. Splitting time with Dijon at the SF (and thanks for the forever burned on my brain image of L.Leslie out there on the court). You go with one of three lineups to take advantage of slashing and shooting...PG-Dean, SG: Dotson, SF: Cedric or: PG: Dean, SG: Hines, SF: Dijon or PG: Storey, SG: Dotson, SF: Cedric

Matthews makes me sad. I had seen the highlight tapes of him. I had seen him at the very start of the season. But he gets out there and you can just sense what he is thinking 'What the frak am I supposed to do?' I can picture him after the season talking to his buddies from home: 'So, how did the season go? Oh, I didn't play much? Oh really, Utah must have been really good. Yeah, well, we did win a few games this year, but I could not beat out Blake Wilkinson. Or really anyone of the other walkons." Yeah, he aint coming back next year.

Call me crazy, but I think that this Ute team can win 10 games next year. I can't wait to watch the 7 games that Foster is going to play.

This thread has great potential, but like the Old Testament, will take time to develop. Generations yet unknown will study it.

Larry will have blown up the roster twice by the time the 2012-13 season starts. If the best he can do after two such overhauls is 10 wins, he should pack his bags.

I expect 15 total wins and 6 in the Pac-12 in Year 2. I would hope to tread water against a tougher schedule in Year 3, and in Year 4 we're in the NCAAs with a veteran team, but one also returning some key cogs (Loveridge, presumably, being the biggest one).

I guess I'll try to interject something here, amidst the flood of interest in Utah Basketball that this thread has created.

I have no clue what in the world is going to happen with this roster.

Storey seemed to be a sure thing for next year, but he had a very rough last couple of weeks. If Utah gets Brandon Taylor to commit, I think Storey is moving on. You can't have more than one guy per roster that weighs less than 140 pounds.

AO looked like he was on the way out, but he came on a bit. I like him, but I don't know why.

Cedric Martin was 0-4 at the free throw line last night. Ced has done everything he's been asked to do. He's just not good. I think he's gone.

Washburn has been inconsistently inconsistent for the last half of the year, which is a major improvement over consistently inconsistent. Save for a commitment of a JC or overseas big, Washburn has to be around next year.

George Matthews doesn't get it. I'll miss him. It's been fun to watch his dad in the stands. We love you, George, but we need some guys that can hit a fat man in the ass with a handful of sand.

Hines will be back. Provided, again, that there isn't a commitment from the PG at CSI? I think?

Lisa Leslie will be back, I think, unless another wing signs. This seems to be a recurring theme.

Javon Dawson would look great in a set of Dickies coveralls.

#11, #13, and Blake Freaking Wilkinson are, I'm sure, good kids who will do great things rebounding for other guys during warmups rather than playing significant minutes.

So, with all of that said, here's the prediction for next year's roster:

                    G: Dean, Brandon Taylor, Seymour
                    G: Dotson, Hines, AO
                    F: Loveridge, Leslie, Hearlihy
                    F: Washburn, Olsen
                    C: Foster, Bachynski

If another wing signs, Lisa Leslie or AO goes. If a JC big signs, the other goes. If Seymour doesn't qualify, Storey stays, and both Storey and Brandon Taylor added together don't weigh as much as Jiggy.

I think there's a chance of Utah signing three more guys, so all of this probably means crap. I hope K can figure all of this out very soon though, because I can hardly sleep due to the ravenous pangs of anticipation.

Finally, I watched Loveridge play against Bingham last week. He makes my nipples hard.

This is about where I fit into this. I saw exactly zero games at the JMHC this year, and I think I caught about four games online/TV. At this point, I barely know the difference between Dawson, Odunsi, and Farr. By the end of last night's game, I think I have them separated out in my mind by now.

Over on UF.N, Storey has seemed to get some love -- at least early in the season. What I've seen of him, I don't get it. Sure, he's a True, but he is tiny and he has no shooting game. We might have been able to get away with a PG like that (off the bench) in the MWC, but if he's the PG we have to rely on, I think we're screwed.

When I say I "followed" Washburn this year, what I mean is I read a lot of post-game articles in local papers. From those, I gathered that:
                      1) He's genuinely gotten better this year and seems to be trending up. On the broadcast last night they said he averaged 16 PPG the last six game sof the season. And he had six blocks last night? Wasn't the joke that if you mixed JW's offense with Foster's D, you'd have the perfect center? Maybe Jason is discovering the other half of his game. This would have been nice to see as an underclassman, but I think we can get some use out of him under the basket as a senior.
                      2) Only Hines has been through as much crap as Washburn has as a player for the Utes. Even Foster at least got to watch this year's trainwreck from the back bench in warmups. Still, I'm amazed at the maturity and positive vibes coming from Jason. He has as much legitimate reason as any player to throw in the towel. But he keeps coming back, saying the right things and being an all around respectable Ute.

I'm scratching my head about Matthews. What happened there? I couldn't pick him out of a lineup, so needless to say, I don't know a thing about his game. Still, he was last year's Loveridge; i.e. the recruit who was going to come in and jumpstart the genesis or our resurgence. Eh... not so much. Was he just the last in the long line of Boylen recruiting whiffs, or was there something else the matter? He's still a young kid with three years left. Is he worth redshirting? Or is he a 100% lost cause?

According to a former Ute player who knows his stuff when it comes to point guards and is close to the program, Storey will never get more than 15 minutes a game in the future. He just doesn't have the talent.

                          Yeah, I can see that.

The thing is, Storey was one of exactly two guys on this Utah team who could beat a guy and take the ball all the way to the rim. He wasn't fantastic at it, but used his quickness to turn the corner and create layups. The other guy was AO, who I think actually had a knack for penetrating and has at least a sniff of a mid-range game.

The more I think about it, the more I think Storey is gone. He's very quick and he's a somewhat creative passer, but I think a point at this level either needs to have good size or a good stroke, and he's got neither.

Glen Dean can do everything Storey can do, and he'll shoot 40% from three. I think the other PG they sign will be similar.

I saw two games at the Hunty this season (ASU and Colorado), and plenty of games on TV, most notably all 3 games in the Bahamas. That last one alone should give me enough juice to comment. I still suffer from PTSD from watching that.

I agree. Storey has good handles and is quick off the dribble, but without the deep threat or a good pull up, teams will just lay off of him and give his defender some inside help. With the graceful shooting motion of a wrestler, I'm not sure he'll ever develop a particularly good deep shot. His release is too low, and for a guy who is already staring at the belt lines of his defenders, it makes it difficult to get those shots off.

Odunsi hasn't impressed me very much either. For a shooting guard, he doesn't shoot very well standing still or on the move.

I agree. Storey is a decent backup, compared to say, McTavish. Dean will be the starter for the next two years, but it'd be nice to have someone with some upside behind him for 2-3 years from now. You mention Taylor. I don't know much about him and whether or not he could replace Storey. So I have Storey returning much in the same reluctant manner Romney will be the Republican candidate: there just isn't anyone better right now, and he isn't that terrible.

PG: Dean, Storey (or other Fr. PG)
                            SG: Dotson, Seymour
                            SF: Leslie, Loveridge, Hearlihy
                            PF: Washburn, Olson
                            C: Foster, Bachynski

That leaves us 2 open scholarships.

The biggest issue was the lack of experience at the SF position, which is why I have Leslie (thanks for that image BTW) returning. She's played some solid D, works hard on the boards, and shoots the ball well. She's been one of our more consistent players.

I like those 4 on the interior. It almost makes my nipples hard thinking of Washburn and Foster in the post defensively.

Lastly, if we don't sign another SG or if Seymour doesn't show up, I can see Martin returning.

What's with the gossip on CB that Odunsi is leaving the program?
