  • BYU the new PG U?

I find it amazing that the one position that BYU has routinely struggled finding quality players is suddenly looking to be a strength for BYU for a number of year, going back to Jimmermania of course. Remember when the prospects of Michael Vranes got BYU fans moist?

I have always thought that in addition to the athletic skills not being all too prevalent in the BYU recruiting base, the paucity of high end hoop talent in Utah, location many BYU players come from, hurt BYU wrt PGs. I believe that good PGs have to play, at least in summer ball, with a glut of other good players in order to learn how to get others involved and generally the good PGs coming out of Utah are generally scoring PGs because they were usually the only real good player on their squad. While BYU has had, and currently has, very competent scoring PGs they are also very capable to getting others involved when defenses look to take away the PG chances to score. It will be interesting to watch Matty C. in this regard vis a vis Jimmer. I happen to believe that Matty is a bit more of a true PG than Jimmer, but I think that is because Matty played with better players growing up and I also believe he will have a better supporting cast at BYU than Jimmer had. I also don't think Matty will develop into being as good a scorer as Jimmer but that is mostly just because statisitically very, very few will score as well as Jimmer.

Of course it will be a real hoot if Nick Emery is able to continue this trend. But holy shit people, this is looking like 7 straight years of good PG play at BYU. Am I the only one utterly amazed by this? Honestly we have gone long stretches of Matt Montague, Kevin Woodberry and Terry Nashif and now we have this stretch where we act as if we are serious hoop fans who understand good PG play. This is pretty damn bitchin!

Jimmer, Rice, and Rose combined for the perfect storm.

Jimmer had the talent and the work ethic. Rice and Rose designed the offense for it.

The Mormon demographic can not regularly produce the traditional cat quick, penetrate and dish, pass first shoot second point guard.

But this new position Jimmer, Rice, Rose and Carlino have created is something we can replicate. And it's proven to be very effective.

    new skillset required:
--first and foremost a great shooter with ridiculous range
--crafty enough and adequate handles to beat your man when he overcompensates to stop the 3
--strong enough to finish in the paint
    --no defense no problem

    Hello, Nick Emery.

Combine with a wing that can be a perimeter stopper on D, shooters on offense, and a big man that can score inside and a big man that can shoot from the outside and open up the middle, voila!

I wonder about Emery. Maybe you guys with much more knowledge can enlighten me.

I hear he scores well, shoots well from all over and is a major "dark hole" when he gets the ball. Orem beat them and I think he was 3-17.

I once knew a kid in Utah that was the scoring leader for the State and never ended up playing D1 ball. I know that isn't Nick, but is he the kind of kid that could end up passing the ball well too?

I liked Matt Montague and I think he is underappreciated by many. However, the fact that I spent 2003 and 2004 wondering what could have been had BYU been able to redshirt him really underscores my point of how far BYU has come.

Maybe it was some sort of sick attempt at humor for GN to include the great MM with guys like Nashif and Woodberry.

Scoring point guards will be like inventing the forward pass. Dave Rose is our Lavell!

Ben Murdock, Kevin Woodbury, Luiz Lemes, Matt Montague, Rashaun Broadus, Lamont Morgan, Austin Ainge, Michael Vranes, Trent Whiting Terry Nashif, Nick Martineau, Matt Pinegar, Josh Reisman, and who can forget Orem Highs own Shawn Opunui.

BYU was point guard U long before Jimmer and Carlino.

Trent Whiting could play. Leading her way to fame, bitches!

Whiting was good for his one year here. Vranes could have been good minus the injuries. Broadus shouldn't have gotten a DUI. Lemes was serviceable.
By far the worst is Nick Martineau, please take away his scholarship.

Lemes was knocked over by a stiff breeze and IIRC correctly, a horrible shooter (maybe it was just his form but I'll have to check his stats). I agree completely on Martineau. When he got blocked last week by a flat footed center I couldn't stop laughing. Good thing he's in only during mop up duty but for the love of all things blue, please walk away Nick.

Of the guys on that list I would rank the top 5 as:

                          1. Whiting (14 per on one of the better BYU teams of this era)
                          2. Montague (217 assists as a senior is unreal, to bad he couldn't shoot)
                          3. Ainge (rare player that came in very overrated and very underrated, 48% from 3 as a senior)
                          4. Vranes (In his 2 full seasons he averaged 9 and 4 while shooting 39% from 3)
                          5. Lemes (solid senior season shooting over 44% from the floor and 40 from 3, could play the 2 as well)

Underrated for his basketball IQ and other mental abilities.

Had huge shoes to fill nad came in with very high expectations and was obviously not as good as his dad or even the same type of player. But like you said great basketball IQ and was a better PG than people give him credit for. He was the starting point guard on an unbelievable team with Keena Young, Trent Plaisted, Lee Cummard, Tavernari, Balderson, Mike Rose and Sam Burgess. It was Dave Rose 2nd year and they won 25 games (and have won at least 25 in every year since).

Maybe a more apt statement would be came in very overrated and left very underrated.
