  • West Coast Conference 2011-12

A snippet from ESPN's CB 'buzz' section today:

    Insider access -- found HERE.

Is this the year of the West Coast Conference? Is this the season that the nation realizes there is more to the WCC than just Gonzaga, St. Mary's and BYU? Judging by the early returns this season, the answer could very well be "yes."

Rob Dauster of the popular basketball blog ballinisahabit.net recently called the WCC the best mid-major conference in the country, and it's hard to argue. Only one school (Portland) in the nine-school conference is currently below .500, and the depth of the WCC is starting to show with the emergence of schools like Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount and San Francisco.

"What do Villanova, UCLA, Saint Louis, New Mexico, Arizona State & UNI have in common?" Jeff Eisenberg of Yahoo Sports tweeted earlier this week. "They've all lost to WCC teams besides Gonzaga or BYU."

btw, the Zags beat Notre Dame by 20 pts last night. The Irish aren't very good this year though.

    West Coast Conference 2011-12

I'm going to go out and help higherroad here and propose a single thread for WCC-related basketball posts for this season. Very simple concept: anything WCC-related which is not also BYU related can go in here. This gives higher road a place to post all the accolades of Portland Southern and San Fran State--as well as his beloved Zags--without cluttering up the board.

Would you be opposed to having a moderator merge this with the freshly minted West Coast Conference 2011-12 thread? Seems like a great place to start that thread.

          Tonight's WCC games:

          St Mary's - 87
          USF - 72

          SMC's Stephen Holt with a near triple-double: 11 pts, 10 asts, 9 rebs.

fwiw, Gonzaga plays AT SMC this Thurs. Big showdown b/w WCC rivals. Tune in. Zags ranked #21 in AP, #23 in ESPN this week.

          BYU doesn't play 'til Saturday.

The WCC adds BYU and still can't do any better than 11th in the conference rankings. Meanwhile, the MWC is 4th in Sagarin.

BYU sold out their basketball program.

New Mexico is on the verge of cracking the top 25, that would be 3 MWC teams in the polls. I hate the WCC.

Now that SDSU is leaving, maybe the MWC will let BYU join in all non football sports.

I should clarify, I don't hate the WCC. It's a fine conference for what it is. I just hate that we're in it. And I hate what college football has done to push us there.

Still can't figure out why BYU fans are so caught up with Conference rankings? This has been a 3-bid conference before.

Also, Gonzaga does just fine, am I right? The Zags currently hold #10 RPI, #13 SOS, 13-2, ranked #21 in the polls.

They schedule teams and beat teams. Don't blame the WCC for your current ranking or lack thereof.

The Cougs lost their WCC opener, struggled on the road & escaped vs LMU, then beat two winless bottom-feeders in their other 2 games -- not really dominating this 'crappy conference' thus far.

Accuse me of propping Gonzaga to no end, this isn't the point of the post, yet rather saying who the hell cares about what Conference you're in or the freaking sagarin ratings -- just get it done!! Conference, small Gyms, disrespect excuses are getting pretty lame.

Yes, the Zags have won the last 11 Reg Season WCC Championships; however, we've also lost 4 WCC Tournaments during that time, yet still managed to receive high at-large bids by the NCAA and nearly always ranked in the Top-25 in every single season. Trust me, 14 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tourney wasn't only b/c 'we play in a lowly conference'. The 4-5 at-large bids and brand name prove just that...

Lastly, the WCC has more games on ESPN this season than the Pac-12 & MWC COMBINED -- 'nuff said.

We will be forced to play 12 conference games against teams that are all ranked lower than the MWC's lowest ranked team. That's compelling viewing. The USD and USF games at home were more boring than the BYU vs BYU-Hawaii exhibition earlier this year.

                              Thanks to BYU.
