On the most general of terms, it's pretty easy to lay out: Get talented guys who can create their own shot and score, and can be taught into being committed defensively.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostTU, what do you want out of Krysko? It's hard to tell.
Everyone talks about wanting to see improvement. Talk about a vague benchmark, and a benchmark that the Boylen apologists blew to smithereens in their rush to defend and insist Jimmy was the guy -- every win, they'd claim improvement was being made. When in fact it was just one game, and Utah would often revert back to previous form in the very next game.
What do I want out of Larry? Hell, I don't know. We're that bad right now. All I know is if we're not a .500 team after Year 4, he's probably gone.

And 11 of 13 scholarship players in Year 2 will be Larry's guys. Boylen's impact on the program next year will be essentially non-existent.Originally posted by Flattop View PostJimmy gets the lion share of the credit for getting out of those guys more than many of us thought was possible. Maybe you two can offer some facts. Since we havea the data on Rose, why don't you compare his recruiting classes the past six years to K's this season.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostI was going to point out this fallacy as well, but I didn't want him to think I was picking on him. Well, I'm not that familiar with Rose's classes, but I do know Majerus' classes and I don't believe that K's class is at the same level. Unless you measure against Maj's final year when he brought in Run DMC and that didn't work out very well. But who knows how good they would have been if Maj was there to bring out their abilities.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostMaybe you two can offer some facts. What I thought. No facts.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostWell, I'm not that familiar with Rose's classes, but I do know Majerus' classes and I don't believe that K's class is at the same level. Let me put it this way. The only national recruit Majerus got before 1998 was Britton Johnsen. Van Horn was more like a regional recruit--he was pursued by Arizona State, but not the really elite programs. Andre Miller was not highly recruited; he switched over from football late in his HS career, and was a prop 48; as a prop 48 he was radioactive to elite programs. Doleac was not recruited at all until his senior season, and then not much; he'd met Majerus at a basketball camp when he was 15; there was an article about that in the FF program. When he was a senior, Oregon, at that time a bad program, showed some interest, but he was already loyal to Majerus. There was no stiff competition for the foreigners. Jensen was a hot local recruit, but that's it; basically the offers came from in-state teams. Same with Marc Jackson. Soto and Josh Grant were inherited from Archibald.
So, who were these hot shot national recruits Majerus got? Remember he also recruited droves of players who washed out of the program.
Really, ironicaly, and sadly, Majerus didn't start recruiting with multiple highly rated players in his classes until after he started to go a little crazy, and there was even arguably only one of those. In fact, his one arguably star studded class--Run DMC--largely disappointed. (They and Bogut were our Final Four bounce.)
The only national recruit Rose has gotten is Damarcus what's his name, and he wasn't nearly as highly reated as Loveridge. Jimmer Freddette got a WAC or even Big Sky level reating. So did Loyd.
At this level, it's the COACHING, stupid. Utah has never had star studded classes like Arizona or Washington or even Oregon (the last two years), or certainly not UCLA. K is going to have to win like Majerus did--with hard work and great coaching--and work up to those star studded classes.
You can thank our last three coaches for squandering our Final four bounce. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Remember when Ute fans were talking like Dave Rose actually had interest in the job. That was awesome.*Banned*

Though I don't agree with SU's comment, I will say that it is WAY too early to truly see how this recruiting class will pan out. What are we calling a recruit? Are Dotson and Dean recruits from this past class even though they are transfers. Does Krystko get credit for keeping Matthews around? I like Odunsi and Storey and I think they can be something...but we won't really know for another year or two. So, really, I have no idea what this class will be like and nobody really knows.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostAbsolute bullshit that Krysto's recruiting class this year was on par with Majerus.
Once again, you point this out...but Boylen's impact will last for years. This program was blown up because of Boylen. Few schools (besides maybe Duke or NC) could have almost the entire roster gone and expect a decent turnaround. Boylen's legacy will affect the Utes for years. Now, with that said...this is Krystko's team, no doubt. I expect disaster this year...next year, I see marked improvement. Yes, thats vague, but I have no real baseline to judge this years team or next years team. I just know that Krystko better get this program going soon.Originally posted by Top Ute View PostAnd 11 of 13 scholarship players in Year 2 will be Larry's guys. I was speaking purely from a W-L perspective. I don't know anything about national recruiting stuff, but I don't see a Phil Dixon or a Byron Wilson on this year's team. I also think that Clyburn and O'Brien would make a big difference to this team.Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."

Though you like funk and katy have no facts to back up your assertion. He won, therefore he must have had star studded classes. Not so. Boylen was not a lot worse recruiter than Majerus in Majerus' run up to 1998, but he was a terrible coach, apparently, and, apparently, the players he brought did not find playing for the U of U a very rewarding experience.Originally posted by Flattop View PostI don't know anything about national recruiting stuff, but I don't see a Phil Dixon or a Byron Wilson on this year's team. Huh? I said the same thing to you that I said to Funk - We have no idea what Krystko's class will look like. There are some things that I like a lot about it and there are some things that I don't like about it at all. We won't know for another year or two just how good this class this will and it is waaaayyyy premature to compare it with Majerus' classes.
