  • Aircraft Carrier Deck Will Host College Basketball Game

    http://www.wired.com/playbook/2011/0...craft-carrier/

Big-time college basketball is coming to an unfamiliar venue.

This Nov. 11 — yes, that would be 11/11/11 — the University of North Carolina and Michigan State University men’s basketball teams, two of the nation’s premier programs, will play the first-ever college basketball game on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

Dubbed the Carrier Classic, the game will be played within a makeshift, stadium-seating arena constructed on the deck of an as-yet-undetermined ship, but we do know that it will take place in the San Diego harbor.

    Very cool.

Gen. Burkhalter: "Klink, I am a staff officer."
Col. Klink: "I didn't mean you sir, you're not clever."

Very cool idea. I see the contingency in the event of rain is to play the game below the flight deck, but what of the normal wind problems that exist, even at anchor? I guess the 7,000 fans and arranged seating will act as a buffer but I still foresee a bit of a guessing game from outside of 5 feet. As I think about it, I'm sure they've thought of that and will make the appropriate arrangements. Very appropriate location.

Plus there is a steady breeze that comes off of San Diego Bay.

I need a ruling on how appropriate it is to have a trivial basketball game played on the deck of a ship where our brave men and women fought bleed and died for their country. USS Utah, LA Ute?

BYU/Bronco are not involved so I bet they'll both be just fine with it.

It's pretty hard to play on a sunken target/battleship.

Edit: I feel also to add that no U.S. ship has been boarded by a hostile force since the USS Buckley in WWII.
