  • Austin Ainge as a coach

    from Goat:
I hope Dave Rice gets the HC job at UNLV and then BYU hires Austin Ainge as it's future HC and current #1 assistant. I think AA knows a great deal about hoops and it is time he returns back to the BYU to start meeting the full measure of his God given creation. Austin was not meant to bring greatness to BYU as a player most of us realized that many years ago, but I have always thought he was destined to be a great head coach at BYU.
I agree with this. Austin was a guy with high BB IQ but lacking the physical tools to exceed. He's obviously been mentored by his dad his whole life. He spent a year or two learning from Roger Reid, who despite his assholeness, is one of the best x's and o's guys you'll ever fine. He's now in the Boston Celtics organization, learning from them, and cutting his teeth at a young age getting a little bit of a head coaching experience with the D league.

I'd like Rose to spend another 10 years as BYU head coach, so I'm not antsy to get Ainge on the staff right away, but it would be good to get him here at some point.

I dunno how much he learned from Roger. Almost as soon as Austin got to SUU, he realized that Roger's ship was a sinking one and jumped ship ASAP. I guess he still spent a season there, so he probably learned something.

On what can one base the idea that Austin Ainge is a sure-fire good coach? I'd prefer to avoid the assumption that he's good because his dad was a good basketball player and GM in the NBA. Why should I think he's a better coaching prospect that, say, Terry Nashif?

I'm not saying Nashif would be better. I just don't see how one can form a well-reasoned opinion based on the available information.

Rose and Daddy Ainge have both said Austin would be a great head coach one day. They're obviously just guessing, but it means more than him just being a former player with a famous dad.

Does it really? Would you expect a dad and a coach to say anything different about a friend and son who wants to be a head coach someday?

Absolutely. I think they would say that they thought Austin would make a fine coach one day. Their comments were much different than that, almost gushing about Ainge's understanding of the game and capability to teach it. They certainly went above and beyond the "he'd do well" bit you'd get from someone just wanting to say something nice about a kid. And even with Daddy as the boss I don't think Ainge would have gotten both a scouting and d-league head coaching gig unless he had some ability.

I don't consider Roger Reid as a bad example. Far from it.

I once talked to an NBA scout at a BYU game during the Austin Ainge era. I jokingly said, "let me guess, you're here to watch Ainge." His response was startling and insightful (especially since he has known the Ainge's a long, long time). He said, "Austin will never play basketball at the next level but even at his age he is the second best coach in this building tonight. He may even be the best."

Take it for what it's worth but I expect Ainge will coach at BYU and be an amazing coach.

                        I think it's Mike Hall's time.

                          Time to what?

I'd feel very uncomfortable if Rose's staff consisted of Terry Nashif, Tim Lacomb, and Mike Hall.

Yes. My admittedly ignorant opinion is that I would just as soon have Hall as either of the other two, but having all three on staff seems like a really inexperienced group.

You should feel uncomfortable if that is his staff. Seems like a really young staff. I would assume the only reason his staff would shake out like that is if he had limited funds to hire his assistants.

Utah sucks right now and our staff of Andy Hill, Tommy Connor, and DeMarlo Slocum blows that staff away and it isn't like we have a great staff (except for Connor).
