Are players and coaches no longer publicly speaking to him? Has the Daily Herald removed him from the BYU beat?
I don't know what to think because the only plausible story I've heard is that he found out Davies got a girl pregnant and was talking to the HC about it and something was about to come out, he talks to BYU about it, and it possibly expedited the timeline. Not really anything malicious there.

If Franchuk did something to publicize an otherwise non public event (such as non-pregnancy sex life of a college kid and the resulting repentance process involving a bishop or the Honor Code Office), I would be first in line to drag him out of his house and tar and feather him. But I don't see anything here.

This ALUF angle about Franchuk doing an investigative piece breaking open BYU athletic Honor Code hypocrisy makes me alternately want to laugh my butt off and slap someone in the face.

edit: wow a lot of violence here, santos, you might want to look at that.

I would like to see a "Monson's People" article about Franchuk, I think it would be fabulous.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I don't think TopUte's question was why - as much as HOW?

Meaning - what are the consequences for the guy? What treatment is he getting? If the worst that happens is people on BYU fan messageboards everything hate him for a month or two - I'm sure he can take that.

But has BYU taken any action against him?

Are the coaches or players refusing to speak to him?

What exactly has happened to him that would lead people to believe that he is persona non grata?

                  Exactly.

I'm gonna guess this: Franchuck isn't the most popular person running in BYU athletic circles, but that's par for the course. Get in line. But any response by BYU that would be perceived as over the line (such as revoking credentials) is something we'd know about already. So I'm going to say what Eddie essentially did ... message board angst = persona non grata.

Agreed, this is simply reporting facts, which is the blessing/curse of the open and free media we enjoy in this country. I agree this is the most likely scenario.

I recall several scriptures mentioning "...peoples' sins will be shouted from the rooftops." Modern communications certainly make that possible.

Again, we agree. Such a practice would be unconscionably damaging to the futures of the young man and young woman, far beyond the scope of repentance (which is supposed to be a private ecclesiastical matter).

If this were the case I would probably join you in cutting him into 1" slices, pouring Gruyere, Parmesan, and heavy cream sauce over him, and baking him into a Persona Au Gratin (figuratively speaking, of course).

On the other hand, if this was the ACTUAL case, that there is no pregnancy/baby involved, then in some ways the school making an example of him for the 'bad choices' made by other athletes in the past is a bit reprehensible.

If this option is the actual case, there is much blame to go around and the public humiliation is a punishment FAR, FAR, FAR(!!!) exceeding the norm. Only a Kool Aid drinking fist roller would be unable to recognize that.

Bring it. Call me what you will. I am thoroughly enjoying the schadenfreude of the situation, and seeing people get so steamed over very minor points to the whole story I have to admit is pretty funny.

I am confident that were we standing face to face, looking eye to eye, and discussing the matter we would be able to communicate and understand one another far better than we can typing messages back and forth on a message board. Obviously some communication nuances are being missed. We are likely far closer to agreement than we realize.

I agree with several people here. For BYU to do ANYTHING to his press credentials significantly damaging to any open communication with the press and would be another nail in the coffin for "academic freedom at BYU".

The one caveat being Franchuk invented the whole thing. If he was pushing any stories of information that was NOT true, then he should have his creds pulled. However his editor would likely have fired him beforehand, so it is a moot point.

The whole persona non grata is merely message board puffery, AFAIK.

Maybe, but I doubt it. You lead with the rumor that Franchuk was writing an investigative piece on BYU athletes getting preferential treatment from the HCO. This is so ridiculous and opposite of the actual reality that I find it hard to believe we could be in the same galaxy on the issue if you believed that rumor. Further, you called out the hypocrisy of the BYU fan on wanting the pristine reputation while not punishing our athletes. As an ALUF, I'm sure you want to preserve the church's integrity. Once again I could not be more opposite on that issue than you. I give a rat's ass about the church's reputation for superior morality and in fact i'd love to blow it to pieces. Meanwhile BYU's athletic prominence actually is something I care about.

NWUF, I am going to try to be nice since you are a fellow engineer. The longer this thread goes on, the worse you look. And when you are in this deep, tossing out stuff like "Kool Aid drinking fist roller" or bragging about schadenfreude does not make you look cooler or better-informed. Hey, it happens to all of us sometimes. At times like this it is often best to just stay down on the canvas.

Why don't you tell us more about nuclear power? You seem to have that topic nailed down.

here's a quote from an article Franchuk wrote on Sunday after the Gonzaga game:

The Cougars were downright giddy after smoking Gonzaga, a team that had a 10-game winning streak and was playing its best ball of the winter.
One player was yelling out of the locker room to a friend. With the door propped open, he saw me wanting to get in to do some last-minute interviews.
"Get on in here, big fella," was the invitation.
Like I said, it was a jubilant environment.
Is Franchuk trying to underline the fact that he still has access to the team?

Yes, and with my post, I am saying:
