Also, I didn't know that Dave Rice turned down the Wyoming job. If Wyoming didnt learn its lesson about offering BYU assistants, Rice certainly has.

Wyoming's a terrible job. High expectations for the fan base with memories of Charles Bradley and Fennis Dembo. No recruiting base. Terrible place to recruit to. They run out coaches quickly who are doing about as good as can be expected.

15,000 seat arena in a 25,000 population town. Losing a game in that arena makes it seem worse than it really is.

You cannot simultaneously claim to "stand for something greater than this life", and also deride Franchuk as a snitch who blew the story wide open. (I am not picking on you directly, so I hope you don't think I am singling you out)


As I know it, the following events happened:
Franchuk was supposedly writing an article showing BYU treats athletes differently than other students in similar situations. Whether right or wrong, he had his article basically written using examples from the past and the Davies thing basically fell in his lap somehow at an appropriate time. He went to the school announcing his intentions. The rest is history, as they suspended Davies after he announced his "situation".

If this is not true, I can't imagine why a hack sportswriter at a small local fishwrap would risk losing his entire credibility to his small local audience over what would be a borderline non-story (Davies "slipped one past the goalie"). That destruction of trust over a minimal story could be the end of a beat writer's career at the paper.

However breaking a story about huge private university who claims to live to a higher law turning a blind eye to their athletes' dalliances would indeed be a big story for a small-time journalist.

Perhaps to BYU's credit they suspended Davies. Some would say that the public nature of the suspension far surpasses any reasonable punishment. Then again, perhaps it was unavoidable as sitting on the suspension until after the season would have proven Franchuk's Theorem.

yeah, talk about biting the hand that feeds you. I don't think he ever published the story either, which means he basically screwed himself.

If he was really looking for that great story that was going to be his ticket to a better market/job, then he should have just ran the story and left it as it was.

It would have been a big story locally. Nationally I don't really think people would care that much. I think most people figure things go on at BYU that are under the wraps anyway, at least the ones who have heard of Jim McMahon.

NWUF has no idea what he is talking about. BYU does treat its athletes different. As you were intimating Jay, athletes get suspended from participating in extracurricular activities or get kicked out of school for sex and regular students do not.

I'm sorry about bringing this up, if it has been discussed before. I have never opened a Davies thread, none of them. Nada. Zilch.

If something is remotely about Davies, I assume it is in one of the Davies threads, available for perusing. I didn't make the connection for this one.

I still won't read the Davies threads. But now I'm angered that he is made the sacrificial lamb for the sins of all the athletes. A point I bet was made in a Davies thread.

I'll try not to. I still don't understand what Franchuk did. I've heard different reports. Not sure what to believe. It's obviously not what NWUF says, because there is no story like that to make up. So I'm still curious what Franchuk was doing.
