IDavies does matter in a Conference Tournament, especially with SDSU being the team to beat. We missed his rebounding, inside game, and our shooters were too tired. SDSU has better depth than us, period. I think not having Davies will hurt us the deeper we get into the NCAA's. I think it's reasonable to expect us to get to the Sweet 16. Any farther will require Jimmer to have insane games.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostDavies does matter as much as we think.

The numbers don't support that conclusion. 37-32 rebound edge to SDSU is hardly a disaster.Originally posted by Jennerstein View PostIDavies does matter in a Conference Tournament, especially with SDSU being the team to beat. This was more about Hartsock not being able to buy a shot and force SDSU to play man-on-man as opposed to five guys collapsing the lane when Jimmer drove

How about you just watch the game? They got easy layups all game and we had no one to score inside or play defense inside (well anderson did for like 2 minutes). Davies does matter.Originally posted by Viking View PostThe numbers don't support that conclusion. 37-32 rebound edge to SDSU is hardly a disaster.

Basketball, like baseball, is numbers. I watched the game.Originally posted by Maximus View PostHow about you just watch the game? They got easy layups all game and we had no one to score inside or play defense inside (well anderson did for like 2 minutes). Davies does matter.
I watched byu play sloppy defense like it does in every game.
I watched Hartsock miss five three pointers. I watched Jimmer double teamed each time he got within an inch of the arc as a result.
If size mattered so much, why didn't SDSU just kill us on the boards?
This was about shooting, or the lack thereof, from the supporting cast.

In a loss like this there isn't just one thing that went wrong. Jimmer's supporting cast has not shown up recently. Also sdsu scored a ton in the paint. If only one of those happens it is a close game. With both happening it turned into a blow out. I think having Davies would have made this a close game with sdsu not scoring as much. BYU had success in the last two games against sdsu by packing it in in the middle and forcing sdsu to chuck it from three. They didn't have the luxury this time around without Davies.Originally posted by Viking View PostBasketball, like baseball, is numbers. I watched the game.

Did you also watch our starters drag ass up and down the court? playing 120 minutes over 3 days will do that. Even if your absurd conclusion about Davies = Hartsock were true, the fact that BYU only has 5 guys that can play is a big problem that Davies would help with immensely.Originally posted by Viking View PostBasketball, like baseball, is numbers. By the numbers, Davies is indistinguishable.Originally posted by woot View PostDid you also watch our starters drag ass up and down the court? playing 120 minutes over 3 days will do that. This thread was started in reaction to the conclusion that losing Davies was the BYU basketball equivalent of the end of the world. That conclusion was incorrect.
I agree that clearly, BYU with Davies is better than without him and definitely resolves our depth problem much more. But that's a different point than I made here and I still believe that BYU can play just fine without Davies.
Jimmer was clearly exhausted from minute 1.

With Davies we're top 10. Without him I don't think we're top 25. I think the fan base is nuts to gloss over this Davies thing. We're terrible inside.Originally posted by Viking View PostBy the numbers, Davies is indistinguishable.

But yeah it's not end of the world. #28 or whatever is not a bad team. It's the equivalent of a 6/7 seed and with the guard line we have, you never know if we can get hot and do damage in the tourney.

After reading this thread, I'm not sure if I rank Viking's basketball expertise higher or lower than Robin's.Originally posted by Viking View PostBy the numbers, Davies is indistinguishable.

Jimmer was clearly exhausted from minute 1."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
