The live media blackout of this press conference is just bizarre.

I think you're stupidOriginally posted by tooblue View PostThis situation represents the worst case scenario for BYU athletics, the institution and it's honor code. It's the perfect storm and a terrible tragedy. As of right now the HC and by association how it is enforced, appears to be sacrosanct. Emboldened by fresh external praise for sacrificing wins in the name of principle, I don't think anything is going to change anytime soon. I fear the only thing this situation may do is force admin to ask some really hard questions about the real value of athletics.

The decision to do this to BYU was made at the highest level on campus. I agree with you that there will be negative fall-out. I believe BYU administration types will view it as persecution of the righteous, not a reasonable response to unreasonable action.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostAnyone who is complimentary about BYU does it in this condescending or ironic way. The truth is this is a PR catastrophe that is the nail in the coffin on BCS conference affiliatiom. Of course, yours truly said all along this kind of stuff would keep them out. Truly, people are horrified. A civil society is tolerant of human failings like teen sex. A progressive society uses birth control. The most unfortunate part may be the Shogun marriage.

If Jason Franchuck really was going to publish a story on Brandon, he should be ashamed. What in the world is newsworthy about Brandon Davies' having sex?
It would only be newsworthy if BYU was intentionally ignoring it.
We can thank the overzealous idiot Franchuck for ruining the best basketball season ever.
Instead of reporting the news, he created the news.

But why wouldn't the reply from the university be "Go eff yourself with or some of your other idiot media buddies!"? It really wouldn't have been that hard to deal with a story that was saying athletes were receiving favorable treatment. All the press release would have to say is, "Each situation is unique and private. Mr. Franchuck is an idiot."Originally posted by dixdog View PostIf Jason Franchuck really was going to publish a story on Brandon, he should be ashamed. If this is true, he should be hounded and have every mistake he makes published on international news. If this is true, the damage he has done to one young man (and his girlfriend) is almost unforgivable.Originally posted by dixdog View PostIf Jason Franchuck really was going to publish a story on Brandon, he should be ashamed. I am trying not to judge Franchuck without the facts, but my blood is boiling. One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

I believe religion has much inherent good and has born many good fruits.

I'll judge Franchuk without the facts. I'm not reading any more of his shit. As far as I'm concerned, he's already been fired and no longer exists. If I see him at Saturday's game, I'll make an exception and do thisOriginally posted by snowcat View PostIf this is true, he should be hounded and have every mistake he makes published on international news. Thats why I think the whole Franchuck thing is off base. If this was the case, BYU would have done what you said and it becomes really a non issue. I don't see how Franchuck changed anything that BYU was going to do.

I don't fault a reporter for trying to do his job, particularly if he notified the school first to let them know what was going to happen.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostYou can be mad at a media guy that is simply doing what media guys do.
I'm puzzled by the leak inside the HC office (the leak itself being a hypocritical breach of the HC, btw).
That is not good PR for the school if a leak is confirmed.
I was annoyed that the Des News and the Trib sat on the Hot Tub story for ten years. If you have a newsworthy story, I think the media has an obligation to report it.
Now if there is a snitch in the HCO office, I'm not very happy. I hope he is found out, fired and sued by Brandon Davies.

I'm puzzled that people think this is not legitimate news. The guy is doing something that will result in him being kicked off the team and they are not supposed to report on that? What if the football team at Miami were all doing cocaine, should the press not report it?Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostYou can be mad at a media guy that is simply doing what media guys do.

If people want to be mad at something, be mad at BYU for having sex police. The reporters didn't create that world, they just take it as they find it. As I have said, I think it is disgusting that this is new, but BYU makes it news by conditioning continued enrollment, sports participation of their athletes on chastity.
