  • Lunardi projects BYU as #1 seed in the west now. Duke out. The others, Ohio State in the East, Pitt in the SE, and Kansas in the SW.

I couldn't effing believe it. What the hell does Texas have to do to not be in contention for a #1 seed? Is a single win over a grieving, exhausted Kansas team really that big of a deal to the extent it covers over five losses three of which are to teams that won't even make the tournament? They have a couple other wins against aTm and besides those two and the Kansas win, they'll have no additional wins against teams ranked in the top 25 in this upcoming poll (though there's a chance that K-State becomes ranked-- Missouri will probably fall out).

I hate to say it, but if BYU wins out and Pitt, Ohio State, Kansas and Duke also win out, BYU is getting a #2. However, I think it's doubtful that all those teams win out. But, for some reason some people still have a boner for Texas, I guess they really want to see a #16 seed finally pull off an upset over a #1 seed.
Texas has nice wins, but with 5 losses they shouldn't even be in the discussion with all these 2-3 loss teams. After today, it's a complete joke that they are still being talked about as a #1 seed possibility.

      • I see a lot of people giving BYU a #1 right now, so don't put too much stock in Dickie V. I also don't necessarily see Duke staying ahead of BYU. I thought it was BS that Duke was #1 to begin with considering their weak resume, so I think this loss will drop them farther than it might otherwise.

The Pitt @ Louisville game tomorrow is huge. It's a tossup according to the prognosticators, and it would be big for BYU if Louisville defends their home court. That game is perhaps the best opportunity for a team ahead of BYU to lose again, except for Duke @ UNC later, which hopefully won't matter.

I'll guess that BYU comes in at either 3 or 4 in the polls depending on how Pitt does, which is good enough for a #1 seed if they can win out. Either way, I think they have to win out to have a chance at a 1 seed.

If they do win out, an overall #1 is possible. The conference tourneys in the B10, BE, and B12 will be brutal this year, and I wouldn't necessarily bet on the highest rank team getting out unscathed.

This has been a really fun year.

        • Gottleib isn't impressed enough. He is thinking they deserve only a 2 or a 3 seed. His reason why Texas should be number 1 over BYU? They beat Michigan State! BYU has only beaten St. Mary's. LOL.

I usually like Doug, but that was terrible analysis and justification on his part. He was using SDSU's schedule to diminish BYU's accomplishments. That didn't make any sense. Talk about BYU's accomplishments like Lunardi just did. #1 RPI. #14 SOS. 8-1 against top 50. And most true road victories in the country with 10. And Doug also talked about the UCLA loss as a bad loss. Uh, a "neutral site" loss to the #1 team in the Pac 10? But Texas beating Mich State this year is a great win? Give me a break.

I think a lot of times they ask one of them to argue against the other just for show. Gottlieb clearly had nothing concrete so he made shit up.

Seriously. I actually had to rewind the first part of his argument against BYU because I was thinking, wait we didn't play Gonzaga or Wichita State. Then I was like why is he talking about SDSU? Then he makes some stupid BYU wins by proxy aren't great comment and I just had to shake my head. Also him saying BYU as a 2 or 3 was stupid. 2 definitely. 3 with this resume is just dumb.

I'm still laughing about the whole Texas deserves a 1 seed 'cause they beat Michigan State.

                    • Even before Texas lost to CU, it seemed on paper that BYU had a better argument. I don't care too much. I will be happy with a 2 seed.

My buddy, whom I watched today's game with, wants (I think only half-seriously) Rose to rest Jimmer throughout the MWC tourney, (essentially throwing the first round game) because he thinks resting would help the team in the NCAAs. I disagree because if BYU exits the conf. tourney in the first round seeding would be hurt. Also, like other pointed out, in BBall rhythm is important and sitting for so long could hurt more than help.

We win the first round matchup with or without Jimmer.

                        • Is Tennessee in or out?

They just lost to Mississippi State (RPI 131) at home, their 12th loss of the season. They've played one of the toughest schedules in the country and thus their own RPI is still around 40 even with those 12 losses. But they now have 3 losses to teams with >100 RPI, including Charlotte that sits at 214.

They've got a bunch of good wins, so even with the bad home loss yesterday they are still in. But I can't believe they are still showing up as 8 or 9 seeds in updated brackets. To me it seems they are close to being on the bubble.

I actually don't think this is a bad idea, unfortunately Rose simply won't do it. As Livecoug mentioned, they probably win that matchup anyway, and if they were to lose, the committee would take into account the fact that Jimmer didn't play. In fact, they might even disregard such a loss completely if Jimmer doesn't play.

Worst case (assuming BYU can beat UNM at home and I'm not sure they will), the one loss - without Jimmer would keep them at a two, IMO.

Heck, the more I think about it, from a seeding perspective, sitting Jimmer in the conference tournament is probably less risky than having him play and trying to win the thing. From an NCAA tournament perspective, I think it definitely helps them with having a chance to rest and heal up the calf injury.

I'd like to think that against either TCU or Wyoming we could rest Jimmer substantially. Plus, the tourney gets done Saturday afternoon. He'll have plenty of time to rest between then and Wednesday. I can't imagine Rose holding really tiring practices in preparation for the NCAA tourney. At this point of the season they just need to stay sharp and healthy.
